LIFE IN UST (1877-1882)

After finishing the first year f a course in


Philosophy and Letters (1877-1878), Rizal
Transferred to the medical course.

His mom Teodora, vigorously opposed the


idea that Rizal Pursue higher learning in the
university.

"Don't send him to Manila again; he knows


enough. If h gets to know more, the Spaniards
will cut off his head."

matriculated in University of Santo Tomas in
the course on Philosophy and letters
because;
1. His father like it
2. He was "still uncertain as to what career to
pursue."

• Father Pablo Ramon (Rector of Ateneo)


- Rizal asked for advice on the choice of a
career.

-In the following term (1878-1879) that Rizal


received the advice of Father Pablo.

• Rizal decided to take up medicine course as


his university course. (Because of two
reasons)

• Rizal also studied in Ateneo. He took the
vocational course leading to the title of Perio
Agrimensor (Expert surveyor).

• He obtained gold medals in agriculture and


topography.

• November 25, 1881 – the tittle was issued to


Rizal for passing the final examination in the
surveying course.

• Liceo Artistico-Literario (Artistic-Literary


Lyceum) of Manila
- society of literary men and artists, held a
literary contest in 1879.

• A La Juventud Filipina (To the Filipino youth)


- the winning poem of Rizal. He won the first
prize which consisted of a 'silver pen, feather
shaped and decorated with a ribbon.'

• El Consejo de los Dioses (The Councils of
the Gods)
- an allegorical drama written by Rizal which
he entered in the literary contest of
ArtisticLiterary Lyceum in 1880 (Fourth
centennial of the death of Cervantes)
- Rizal won again the first prize (a golden ring
on which was engraved the 'bust of Cervantes).
- D.N. del Puzo (Spanish writer) is the
second place.

1. JUNTO AL PASIG (BESIDE THE PASIG)


- a zarzuela which was staged by the
Ateneans on December 8, 1880. (Feast day of
the Immaculate Conception)

2. A FILIPINAS
- a sonnet written by Rizal for the album of
the Society Sculptors. He argued all Filipino
artists to glorify the Philippines.

- was written in 1879 which was declaimed
by an Ateneans, Manuel on the night of
December 8, 1879.

of higher learning because;
1. The Dominican professors were hostile to
him.

2. The Filipino Students were racially


discriminated against by the Spaniards.

3. The method of instruction was obsolete


and repressive.

1. Was Rizal discriminated by his professors


and the friars?
- No, Rizal was favored.
- He was given the highly unusual privilege of
being allowed to take up his pre-Med with Med
proper--a feat allowable only with the full
endorsement of the Spanish Rector who was a
friar himself and the approval of the Spanish
Governor General.

2. Were Filipino students racially discriminated?


- No, Filipino students got the best grades.
- There were initially 24 students in his first
year, but only 7 remained in his fourth year in
UST with Rizal as 2nd place and with Cornelio
Mapa, a fellow Filipino student, topping the
class. The top 4 were Filipinos while the bottom
3 who got dismal grades were Spanish.

3. Did Rizal got low grades?


- No, Rizal received excellent grades.
- No one in their right mind should compare
HS grades with grades in Medicine. Rizal took
Segunda Ensenanza at the Ateneo Municipal,
which is comparable to HS in today's terms.

3. Did Rizal got low grades?


-If there is a point of comparison, then that
should not be his grades in the Ateneo, but with
his fellow med classmates.
-Rizal was 2nd in his 4th year at UST with
Cornelio Mapa, also a Filipino, placing first.
-He is not on record as having ever
complained about his grades in UST, while he
did complain about those he received in Madrid.
