COMPARE ORCAD AND ALTIUM

VS
Main differences between Orcad and Altium
1. user interface and navigation : altium interface is more user-friendly than Orcad
2. simulation accuracy and result: Orcad is faster and more accurary
than Altium
3. 3-D visualisation: Altium is a better with newer 3D engine
4. schematic library editor:altium allows better editting and placing of electrical
components
5. intergration with PCB footprint and library: adding simulation properties is
easier with altium
6. net management and Database management: store and transfer information is
better with Orcad
7. price : Orcad is much cheapper than Altium

Simulation Presnetiontation
Why we use the GND (0) instead of using GND same the schematic before?

It is because PSpice simulations must have a 0 ground reference in order

to resolve initial DC bias calculations.

If any node in the schematic does not have a DC ground 0 reference,

a floating node or less than two connections error will result.
Pspice and Arduino

it is possible to simulate an Arduino hardware with Pspice.

4. DRAW A SCHEMATIC CIRCUIT BY
ORCAD CAPTURE CIS
1) Start OrCAD Capture ( 2 ways)

• First way: Start -> All Programs -> OrCAD Family Release 9.2 -> Capture (Capture
Cis).

• Second way: Click this icon on

the Desktop.
Then the interface
of OrCAD Capture
will appear like this

2) Create a new project
a) Create a new project

To create a new project you can do

like this
Or select the Create document command button
• Select menu File -> New ->

• The OrCAD Capture screen looks like this:
b) Initial settings for the sketch

To start sketching a Schematic, we first go to

Options -> Preferences -> Set custom
properties.  A Preferences dialog box like this

• Place point: select object • Place junction: Set junction

• Place part: component library • Place bus: entry Connect to the bus line

• Place wire: rope link • Place power: get the source

• Place net alias: set line label • Place ground: get the mass

• Place bus: draw the bus connection

• Place no connect: point not connected
3) Draw a schematic

a) Search and select

components

• Press the P key (or Shift
+ P or Place Part       ) to
acquire the component.
The following window
appears:
• Then we should Add all the libraries. As each
• we are seeing empty Libraries. To add a library, click library has various components,

suitable area and left click.
• To continue arranging components in various places, left-click; to stop placing
components, use ESC on the keyboard.

• After selecting and placing all components on the design page. To wire, use
the W key or the icon toolbar.

• If you wish to relocate the components, simply click and drag them to a new
spot.

• Rotate (R) actions rotate the component, whereas Vertical (V) and Horizontal
(H) operations flip it vertically or horizontally.
b) Draw a specific circuit

Circuit to regulate and stabilize the motor

speed. The schematic circuit is depicted in
the diagram below.

Circuit components: 5 resistors, 1 rheostat,

2 non-polar capacitors, 3 rectifier diodes, 2
reverse transistors, 1 triac, 3-pin switch.
• Now return to the Place Part window(Shift P). Let's get cursor in the Part frame and enter R
to get the following image.

• Enter to get R. It will then follow

our mouse and click on 5 spots
to get 5 resistors. Then, hit ESC or
click the Select toolbar button
to quit

• We do the same thing to pick the pins for the

components; in the Part frame, type CON2, then
click OK to return to the desktop.
• To acquire a variable resistor, type
RESISTOR VAR in the Part box.

• Select CAP NP at the Part frame of

the library to receive a non-
polar capacitor, then OK to return
to the working screen.
• Next, you select DIODE in the Part frame
to get a diode, click OK to return to the
working screen. Left-click on 3 different
places to get 3 diodes.

• Type SW MAG-SPDT in the Part frame to

choose the 3-pin switch, then click OK to return
to the working screen. To pick the switch, left-
click anywhere on the drawing page.
• To get the Triac, type TRIAC in the Part frame of the Place Part dialog
box, click OK, and then left-click anywhere to pick Triac.

• In the Part frame, type INDUCTOR

FERRITE to choose coil. Return to the
working screen by hitting OK.
• Then, in the Part box, type NPN • Finally, on the toolbar, click the Place
to pick the NPN transistor. OK.  Ground     to choose the Mass foot.
Select SOURCE in the Libraries frame, 0
in the Symbol frame, then OK to return
to the working screen.
• After getting the
components, we
have the following
picture:
c) Arrange components

• Because the components are still

dispersed, you must first pick the
component to be rotated and then hit
the R, H, or V keys to arrange them
neatly in preparation for wiring.
• Press the W key (Place
Wire) to connect the wire;
the pointer will change to a
plus sign, and we'll begin
wiring. As a result, we have
the image below:
• Double-click the component to open the Display
Properties dialog box. Enter the value of the component
you wish to edit in the Value box, then OK to finish.
Here is the complete circuit
4) Check schematic error

• Click the minimize icon          on the top right corner, the screen
appears as follows. Select page 1.
• Click the design rules icon check.

• The Design Rules Check dialog box

appears, check Scope, Action & Report as
shown below, and click Ok to check.

• If an error message appears, please

verify the spot with the little
colored circle green and then rectify
the issue and continue.
5) Create netlist file
• After checking for no errors, we proceed to create a .mnl file to
switch to Layout , select       on  the toolbar, or select Tool=>
Create

• The Create Netlist

window appears, select
Layout, in the Options
tab select User
Properties are in inches
to manually select the
footprint.
• Browse to find where
you want to store the
file, click OK
• To finish the netlist file generation procedure, choose OK in
the following dialog box.
