AN IMPACT OF INTERACTIVE

FILMS ON A PERSON
Made by Oryna Hnatiuk, 208
WHAT IS THIS GENRE?
• During many scenes, the player has limited control of
the character and chooses certain actions to
progress the story. Other scenes are
quick time event action sequences, requiring the
player to hit appropriate buttons at the right time to
succeed. Some of these games, such as the Sound
Novel series, Shadow of Memories, Time Travelers,
Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and
Detroit: Become Human, have numerous branching
storylines that result from what actions the player
takes or fails to complete properly, which can include
the death of major characters or failure to solve the
mystery. This idea was even further realized in
Telltale's The Walking Dead series, where player
actions can drastically change future games, for
example, different characters may be alive in the end
depending on choices made by the player in The
Walking Dead season 1, but those same characters
affect The Walking Dead: Season Two.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
1.Relaxation: Somewhat obviously, certain films allow for a soothing experience. Playing in an interactive film allows one to
disconnect from their surroundings for a duration of time. Our minds are actively engaged with the PC , allowing external thoughts
and worries to fade away.
2.Motivation: Fictional characters can act as motivating agents. Seeing an iconic character may influence the player to become more
like that character or become less like a repulsive character. Certain action lines may inspire players to take on similar activities in
their own lives. For example, a very passionate character may influence a player to pursue their own personal interests.
3.Relationships: Throughout the industry, interactive films show very different familial and friend relationships. Watching and
analyzing these relationships may allow one to reflect and grow on their own connections.
4.Social Reflection: Video games bring awareness to social topics, many that may be thought-provoking and influential to players.
Witnessing another, viewpoint, or background can have great effects on players.
5.Emotions: Playing in a interactive film game has a cathartic effect, allowing viewers to experience strong emotions through an
activity. This can be very beneficial for those who have trouble expressing emotions, as films may easily prompt them to laugh, cry,
or experience an emotion.
6.Relief: Watching stressful scenes in video games, such as horror scenes may actually make us feel better in the long run. Temporary
stress releases cortisol, which is automatically met with dopamine, once that stress is erased. This emotional rollercoaster may be
very beneficial to players.
• On the contrary, the game has beautiful graphics to compensate for its flaws; from the tiniest detail of the grass on the road
to the shine in the hair of the characters. The dialogue set much of the story forward, propelling it in ways that were
heartbreaking, warming, and all of the above. Meanwhile, the downsides came from the the character Markus, who was
acted and voiced by Jesse Williams. The way Williams read Markus’ lines, his character is displayed blandly with a
monotonous voice and stiff movement.  As Markus is seen as the leader of the deviants, he should be presented in a more
prideful and powerful tone. However, the voice acting made marvelously by actors like Bryan Dechart who voiced and
acted Connor, as well as Valorie Curry who voiced and acted Kara helped recover some of the lack of emotions found in
Markus.
• Detroit: Become Human envisions a future that we may have in just a few years, cautioning us to the dangers that might
erupt from a technology driven world. Though there are some imperfections in the game, the excellent gameplay and
storylines make this an enjoyable and spectacular game. With three paths to follow in Detroit: Become Human, we view
the ventures of a few androids who turn the game around like no other: Kara, Markus, and Connor.
