1
Introduction

• Common Name Ladyfinger

• Botanical Name Abelmoschus esculentus

• Family Malvaceae

3
Conti…

• Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is recognized as annual

herbaceous plant grown in tropical and subtropical areas
• To the total production of 4.8 million ton pods of okra in the
world, India contributes 70%, Nigeria 15%, Pakistan 2%, Ghana
2%, Egypt 1.7% and Iraq 1.7%

• It was originated in India but now grown in many parts of world

including the Middle East, Africa, Brazil, Turkey ,Pakistan and USA

4
Conti…
•Okra serves as a source of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and
various minerals

•Okra seeds containing good quality edible oil and high protein
are used to complement other protein sources

• Okra plant at prior growth stages is more susceptible to

salinity as it affects water relations and nutrient uptake of
plants.

5
Conti…
• During long term contact to salinity, plants familiarity ionic
stress, which can lead to early senescence of adult leaves
and thus reduction in photosynthetic rate is a common
observation

• Salinity creates water and ionic imbalance in plants due to

existence of poisonous ions. Plants affected by salt stress
show stunted growth and the leaf color gets darker

6
Conti…
• Many regions in the world contain soils which are too
saline for economic crops which affect the plant growth
through oxidative stress and osmotic effects

• About 10 billion dollars is the global annual loss in the

production of agriculture due to salt affected land

7
Adverse effects of Salinity on Okra

• Nutritional Status of the Plant

• Hormonal Level
• Juvenility
• Position of Plant Part

8
Objectives
The objective of this work was,

• To screen out the available okra cultivars for salt tolerance

• To analyze the morpho-physiological effects of salt stress
on okra

9
Materials and Methods

10
Materials
• Different Genotypes of Okra (10)
• Sand
• Distilled water
• Pots

• NaCl Solution

11
Methodology
• The present Experiment conducted at College of Agriculture,
BZU Bahadur Sub Campus Layyah. The research work carried
out in an experiment. Experiment was laid out in completely
randomized design (CRD). The seeds of okra cultivars for the
study obtained from Ayub Agricultural Research Institute
(AARI), Faisalabad and NARC, Islamabad.

12
Methodology

Conclusion
The germinated seedlings were compared according to different parameters i.e.

emergence % , germination percentage%, plant height , plant root fresh and dry Weight ,

shoot fresh and dry weight . On the basis of the Okra genotypes capacity of salt

tolerance and results, the okra genotypes OH- 713, OH-139, OH-138, and OH-001 were

among the most tolerant group and medium tolerant group included OH-152, OH-597,

and MD-02. Lower medium tolerant group was identified included the, Sabzpari, Okra-

7100 and Okra-7080. After the results of this our experiment. So, from the final results

the above categorized Okra genotypes are salt tolerance in saline soil and are good for

salt affected regions.
