14.STORAGE

14.1 Chemical

14.1.1 All chemicals are stored in a locked storage room to eliminate the possibility of
chemical contamination of ingredients as well as protecting the work area and the
employees from exposure to hazardous chemicals.

14.1.2 Use proper and secure storage containers that are appropriate for the materials
to reduce the risk of leakage, spillage, contamination, or reaction, with proper
platforms/shelves for safe keeping
14.2 Equipment

14.2.1 Equipment must be stored in a store with racks whereby it is easy to


access the equipment as and when required with storing of equipment on daily
usage basis

14.3 Machinery

14.3.1 Machines must be kept in a systematic manner so that it is easily taken out for
use without any hindrance.

14.4 Consumables

14.4.1 Consumables such as tissue rolls, and toilet rolls must be kept in a
dry area and easily accessible as these are fast moving items
14.5 Compliance of Storage

• Chemicals must be stored at an appropriate temperature and humidity level.


This can be especially problematic in hot, humid climates. As a
rule, chemicals should not be stored near heat sources, such as steam pipes
or laboratory ovens. Chemicals should never be stored in direct sunlight as
this can be very risky for explosions due to high temperature exposure

14.5 Segregation

• 14.5.1 The chemicals and machines must be segregated as some corrosive


chemicals can damage the machines according to its description such as
acidic solutions.
14.5.1 Ventilation

14.5.1.1 Proper room ventilation with adequate air exchanges will eliminate most unsafe
vapours and room temperature must be within the stipulated atmostpheric temperature

14.5.3 Sewerage Connected

Any surface water run-off should be channelled to a proper drainage system to avoid the
water from entering the storage area, and also entering the environmental areas such as
streams and rivers.

14.5.4 Washing Facilities

There should be an adequate supply of cold running water and a sink with tap water, buckets
with taps, tippy-taps, and jugs or basins designated for handwashing and bathing purposes
after chemical handling
14.5.5 Label

14.5.5.1 All chemical and containers must be clearly labelled with


the full chemical name and must contain appropriate hazard
warning information.

14.5.5.2 All chemicals should be labelled with the “date received”


and “date opened” and expiry date of the chemicals.
16. MANAGEMENT OF GENERAL WASTE

16.1 Definition

• Waste that does not pose any infectious/ biological, chemical, radioactive or
physical hazard. All materials shall be segregated at the point of generation,
appropriately treated, and disposed properly.

16.2 Source of Generation

• The location which generates non-clinical wastes in the Contract Hospital.


16.3 Specification of General Waste Store

General waste store is the designated area and constructed exclusively for
storing general waste prior to collection by the local authorities or licensed
contractor.

16.3.1 Tiles

The floor of the storage area must be covered with concrete or any suitable
lining material, free of cracks and gaps.
16.3.2 Sewerage Connection

• The storage area should be properly managed to prevent rainwater or surface


water from entering the storage area.

16.3.3 Ventilation

• Good ventilation with filtered air and positive pressure, temperature, and
relative humidity with a minimum air change
16.3.4 Fully Fence

• The entire storage area must be fenced-in and regarded as restricted area.
Adequate signage should be put up clearly and visible with the word
“DANGER” and “SCHEDULED WASTES STORAGE”

16.3.5 Drying Area

• The storage place should be sheltered or roofed or covered with suitable


covering material.
16.4 Route

• These are the passageway in the hospital setup to ensure general waste to be
collected from the designated waste at quarters to general waste store.

16.5 Segregation of Waste (3R)


• Segregation of waste into clinical, recyclable, and non-clinical is essential to
ensure that clinical waste is treated and handled properly to avoid any possible
hazard and cross infection to hospital staff, patients and the public. Clinical waste
which is segregated will be stored in yellow bag holders. Recyclable waste is
segregated shall be discarded into receptacles dedicated for the different types of
recyclables. While the non-clinical wastes shall be collected using black bags and
dispose off during the scheduled collection of wastes.
16.6 Central General Waste Store

16.6.1 Central general waste storage is designated to minimize the


movement of waste in the open from initial storage and the areas should be
covered and located with proper drainage

16.6.2 A place to hold all general waste collected from the hospital for
subsequent disposal by Local Authorities. It shall also be equipped with
washing facilities
