ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my special thanks to my teacher Mrs. Aachal Pandit
as well as our principal Mrs. Priya Tyagi who gave me the golden
opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic “BIOMES” which
also helped me in doing a lot of research and I came to know about a lot of
new things. I am really thankful to them.
Secondly, I would like to thank my parents and sister who helped me a lot
in finishing this project within the limited time.
I am making this project not just for marks but also to increase my
personal knowledge.

THANKS Again To All Who Helped Me.

Certificate
This is to certify that “Aarushi Goyal”
student of Class - 12 ‘Science’ has
th

successfully completed their Biology

project on “Integrated Project on Biomes”
under the guidance of Mrs. “Aachal
Pandit”.

adaptations.

Major Biomes On earth are :-
Deciduous
Grassland Savanna
Forest

Tropical
Forest Desert Taiga

Tundra Woodland
Tropical Rainforest
 These forests are characterized by two words:- hot &
wet.
 As these forests have very high and continuous
rainfall and the monthly temperatures of these forests
exceed 18°C.
 A single hectare of rainforest may contain 42,000
different species of insect, up to 807 trees of 313
species and 1,500 species of higher plants.
 These have been called the “world’s largest
pharmacy”, because over one quarter of
natural medicine have been discovered within them.
Tundra
 Tundra are treeless regions where the climate is
cold and windy and rainfall is scant.
 Tundra are covered with snow for most of the
year. The avg. temperature is -34°C to -6°C.
 Mountain goats, sheep, marmots, and birds live in
mountain—or alpine—tundra and feed on the low-
lying plants and insects.
 Hardy flora like cushion plants survive in the
mountain zones by growing in rock depressions,
where it is warmer and they are sheltered from
the wind.
Deciduous Forest
 It is a biome dominated by the trees which lose their leaves
seasonally. Another name for these forests is broad-leaf forests
because of the wide, flat leaves on the trees.
 The avg. temperature is 50°F and annual rainfall averages 30 to
60 inches. Sometimes, precipitation is also in the form of snow.
 In tropical deciduous forests, trees lose their leaves in the dry
season & regrow them in the rainy season. In temperate
deciduous forests, trees lose their leaves & regrow them in the
spring.
 These forests are home to mammals like mice, rabbits, foxes,
deer, otters, bears, elephants, monkeys, tigers, and giraffes.
 Trees such as oak, birch, beech, elm and maple. Tropical and
subtropical forests also have teak trees, palm trees and bamboo.
Grassland
Grasslands are areas where the vegetation is
dominated by grasses.
They consist of large open areas of grass; trees can
be present, but they are infrequent.
Low rainfall, wildland fires, and grazing by animals
are three factors that maintain grasslands.
The animals found in grasslands range from African
elephants to various species of prairie dogs.
The low precipitation rates are enough to nourish
grasses but not enough for a forest of trees.
Desert
 A desert is a barren area of landscape where
little precipitation occurs making living conditions
hostile for plant and animal life.
 Some deserts are very hot, with daytime temperatures
as high as 54°C, other deserts have cold winters or are
cold year-round.
 Humidity—water vapor in the air—is near zero in most
deserts. Light rains often evaporate in the dry air,
never reaching the ground.
 Major deserts in the world are:- The Sahara Desert, The
Gobi Desert, The Thar Desert, The Arabian Desert, The
Arctic Desert, etc.
