STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES

 Standard 2.E.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the daily and seasonal weather patterns.
 2.E.2A. Conceptual Understanding: Weather is the combination of sunlight, wind, precipitation (rain, sleet, snow, and hail), and temperature in a particular
region at a particular time. Scientists measure and record these conditions to describe the weather and to identify patterns over time. Weather scientists
(meteorologists) forecast severe weather so that communities can prepare for and respond to these events.
 Performance Indicators: Students who demonstrate this understanding can:
 2.E.2A.1
 2.E.2A.2 2.E.2A.3
 2.E.2A.4
 Analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements to describe local weather conditions (including temperature, wind, and forms of
precipitation).
 Analyze local weather data to predict daily and seasonal patterns over time.
 Develop and use models to describe and compare the effects of wind (moving air) on objects.
 Obtain and communicate information about severe weather conditions to explain why certain safety precautions are necessary.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES
OF WEATHER?

Weather is made up of things such

as sunlight, wind, precipitation, and

like rain, sleet, snow, and hail.

HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT THE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE?
Scientist's measure and
record the different
conditions they see to
describe the weather.
After scientists make these
observations, they are able to
create weather patterns, so we

of the week to look like.
WHO ARE THE
SCIENTISTS
THAT TELL US
THE WEATHER
PATTERNS?

THESE PEOPLE WHO

MEASURE AND OBSERVE OUR
WEATHER PATTERNS ARE
CALLED, METEOROLOGISTS.
 They are really important because they tell us
WHY ARE what weather events are in the future, what to
expect and how to prepare.
METEOROLOGISTS  For example, we have to know when to be in

IMPORTANT AND a safe shelter if there is a bad thunderstorm

coming, or even a hurricane or tornado, or
HELPFUL TO US? snowstorm.
WHAT DOES A WEATHER PATTERN LOOK LIKE?

 One way to see the weather pattern for the week is

on the news.
 The meteorologist on the news show always tells us
what to expect for the weather for the week.
HOW CAN YOU SEE WEATHER PATTERNS?

We can always find out what the weather is by watching the
news, but we also can see the weather by looking at various
weather apps on our smartphones and tablets.
You can also always know the weather by looking outside and
determining if it is sunny or rainy, hot or cold., but it is always
good to look at the weather patterns for the week to avoid
severe weather.
WHAT ARE SEVERE
WEATHER
CONDITIONS?
 Severe weather is when the
different aspects or types of
weather have the potential of
creating risks to any life or
property.
 Some types of weather
conditions are severe
thunderstorms, strong winds,
tornadoes, large hail, flash
flooding, snowstorms, ice
storms and hurricanes.
WHAT IS TEMPERATURE?

 The temperature is a main part of the weather.

 Temperature can be measured in Fahrenheit
and Celsius with a thermometer as a degree of
hotness or coldness.
 Certain weather conditions can only occur in
particular temperature conditions.
 For example, snowstorms happen when the
weather is really cold which is usually during
the winter.
WHAT IS WIND?
 The wind is a movement of air
caused by uneven heating of the
earth by the sun and the earth
rotation, as well as differences in
air pressure in our atmosphere.
 Wind can appear as just a breeze,
or it can be a main part of
thunderstorms, snowstorms, ice
