STANDARD SCORES (Z-TEST)

 This topic examines the logic of z-scores and discuss how

to compute them.
 STANDARD SCORES use the standard deviation as the
unit of measure, they describe the relative position of a
single scores in the entire distribution of scores in terms
of the mean and standard deviation.
 STANDARD SCORES, also called z-scores indicates the
number of standard deviation and the corresponding
scores above and below the mean.
COMPUTING Z-SCORES


The z-scores is computed by subtracting the mean
for the raw scores and dividing the result by the
standard deviation
1. where:
2.X=(z)(s) + x z= standard scores
3. x = raw scores
4. s = standard deviation
  example,
For

x = 40 x = 36, 42, 50
SD = 8
-0.50 1.25
0.25
Computing a raw scores when z is known

x = (z)(s) + x

Example if z =1 , s = 10 , x = 60
x = (1)(10) + 60
x = 70

Properties of z-scores
1. A z-distribution always has the same shape as
the raw scores distribution.
2. The mean of any z-distribution always equal 0.
3. The standard deviation of any z-distribution
always equal to 1.

Uses of z-scores
The z-scores are used to:
1. Compare the different distribution
2. Describe scores; and
3. Describe sample
