GIVING INJECTION

OBJECTIVE

 To describe medical
equipment/instruments/supplies dealing
with the activities of giving medicine (by
injection)
 To practice the communication with the
client during the process of giving
injection.
TECHNIQUES of DRUG ADMINISTRATION

A drug may be administered by mouth


(orally) or through the skin
(parenterally). Parenteral methods
include: injection into a vein
(intravenously); into a muscle
(intramuscularly); under the skin
(subcutaneously).

The injection techniques based on the sites of injection:
1. IV (intravenous): injection into the vein
 Taking the blood from vena
 Giving medicine through vena
2. IC (intracutaneous): injection into the skin
3. IM (intramuscular): injection into the body muscle
4. SC (sub-cutaneous): injection into tissues just below the dermis of the skin/hypodermic
5. Intracardial: injection into the heart
6. Intra-arterial: injection into the artery
 Taking the blood from artery
 Determining BGA (Blood Gas Analysis = the content of oxygen and carbon dioxide)

PREPARING THE SYRINGE and MEDICINE
1. Wash hands
2. Make sure that the prescription and dose are correct
3. Gain informed consent
4. Prepare needed equipment and medical supplies: vial/ampoule, disposable syringe,
hand gloves, alcohol cotton balls or sterile swab, alcohol or solvent (e.g. normal saline
or sterile water)
5. Check the syringe by pulling and pushing the plunger to make sure that it works well.
6. Get some air by pulling the plunger
7. Remove the plastic metal seal of the vial then clean (sterilize) the rubber stopper with
alcohol cotton.
8. Remove the needle cap
9. Insert the needle into the vial and push the plunger to let the air out from the syringe.
10. Invert the vial and draw up the medicine as the prescribed dose by pulling the plunger.
11. Take out the needle from the vial and cap it off.
12. Put the syringe and medical supplies in the injection tray.
The Procedure of IM Injection in The
Adults
1. Give explanation about the injection process and the cautionary expression
2. Examine the syringe for air. Invert and tap the syringe gently to let the air up to the
top of the syringe, push the plunger to release the air from the syringe and needle
3. Expose the injection site
4. Disinfect the injection site with alcohol cotton (sterile swab)
5. Use hand gloves
6. Remove the needle cap
7. Grasp and hold the skin by using the thumb and index finger.
8. Inject at the correct site and angle (90°) by thrusting the needle all the way into the
skin, then push the plunger to transfer the medicine
9. Remove the needle smoothly and press (massage) the injection site gently with
the alcohol cotton
10. Cap the needle off
11. Dispose of the equipment correctly
