Osmosis

Summarization
Group 3
Osmosis is one of the transport processes in the cell

Osmosis - Process in which diffusion of

a solvent through a selectively
permeable membrane from an area of
lower solute concentration to an area of
higher solute concentration
 The net diffusion of a solvent, which
is water in living systems, through a
selectively permeable membrane.
 Permeable means allowing liquids or
gases to pass through it.
Osmosis and Cell Transport
List three rules that help to describe the osmotic behavior of
cells in response to solutes, permeant and impermeant.

 1st Rule - Normally: Cytosol = Extracellular fluid → Cell volume remains constant
 2nd Rule – The force exerted by the solute in a solution, it is called the Osmotic Pressure.
There are two sides when the osmosis happened, the one side is the hypotonic solution
and the other side is the hypertonic solution and in the middle of these two sides is the cell
membrane. The diffusion only happens in a selective permeable or semi-permeable
membrane. The osmosis will not occur in the impermeable membrane.
 3rd Rule – The purpose of Osmosis is to maintain or to reach the equilibrium of both
intracellular and extracellular part of the cell or what they called Isotonic Solution
