KEPNER-TREGOE TECHNIQUE

Kepner Tregoe is used for decision making .

• It is a structured methodology for gathering information and
prioritizing and evaluating it.
• It is very detailed and complex method applicable in many areas,
which is much broader than just idea selection.
• It is called also a root cause analysis and decision-making method.
• It is a step-by-step approach for systematically solving problems,
making decisions, and analyzing potential risks.

Four Clear Thinking Processes
 Situation Appraisal (SA)
Situation Appraisal helps answer the question: What is going on?

• Problem Analysis (PA)

Problem Analysis helps answer the question: What went wrong?

• Decision Analysis (DA)

Decision Analysis answers the question: What is the best alternative?

• Potential Problem/Opportunity Analysis (PPA/POA)

Potential Problem Analysis answers the question: What could go wrong?

SITUATIONAL APPRAISAL
1. Separate and Clarify Concerns
• What do we mean by….?
• What exactly is….?
• What else concerns us about...?
• What evidence do we have…?
• What different deviations, decisions, or plans are part of
this concern?
SITUATIONAL APPRAISAL
Characterize the Problem
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
 Describe the problem
• Ask and clear doubts
Talk to experts
• Collect data (measure the problem)
• Document before/after photos
• Write down the problem precisely
Add charts and data
• Decide, if this is the problem or something else?
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
 Identify Possible Causes-
• Data Collection
• Hypothesis- test the hypothesis
• Brainstorm- come up with several solutions
• Calculate the costs of:
• Each solution (multiple solutions).
• No solution (ignore the issue).
• Delay in solving the issue (urgency).
• Public opinion
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
 Blocks to the Solution
• Mental blocks
• Not accepting the problem.
• Thinking inside the box.
• Passing the buck
• Avoid the blame-game
• Fear of failure
• Fear of unknown
• Communication issues
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
 Evaluate Possible Causes-
• Once work is done, evaluate it.
• Write completion report.
• Give presentation
• Share credit
• Update accounts
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
 Confirm True Cause-
• Research the problem on internet/library/talk.
• Find out the experts, call them.
 Think Beyond the Fix-
 Action plan
 Come up with an action plan
 Find out which tasks are “critical”.
 Make a budget for each task.
 Enlist help for faster execution
 Keep a backup plan.
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
 Execution
 Make a proposal
 Make presentations and get feedback
 Get management support
 Get manpower with skill sets.
 Create the team
 Create communication channels
