What’s a pass?
Passing in basketball is a way for players to move
the ball on the court between teammates. Passing

01
is a two-step process that requires a minimum of
two players on the same team to be effective. The
passer must be accurate and must put the correct
amount of velocity on the pass in order to reach
their teammate in a timely fashion and in the
right location.
2 PASSES
2.1 Basic Passes 2.2Complex Passes
These kinds of passes mainly serve to confuse the opponent
- Chest pass about our true intentions, because they are not movements that
a player would make naturally. There are several types of
complex pass:
- Pass over head
- Pass hand in hand
- Chopped pass
- Behind the back/Sash pass
- 'Baseball' pass
- Pass 'hook'

- Pass with the elbow

To get better: practice focusing on the next things:

2.1 Basic Passes 1. Locate the partner to whom we want to pass the
ball.

- Chest pass: 2. Maintain a balanced posture.

The technique is simple: we place the ball
at the height of our chest, while holding the 3. Passing the ball out from chest height.

Here’s a good video that explains the
technique:

able to finish it on goal within the area. correct technique. This way you can practice the
catch too.
- Pass over head
Technique: Initially we start with the ball held with both hands
above our head. To make the pass, we simply have to bend the
elbows before throwing the ball in the direction to our partner’s
chest, at the same time we should control the strength with which
we throw the ball and thus prevent it from coming out too
pumped.

Tactics: The overhead pass is used for long distances and after a
rebound. And also when the defender is directly in front and we
need to pass over him (it can be a counterattack pass after
capturing the defensive rebound and having just that defender
pressuring the exit to the player with the ball).

To improve:
Practice, either against the wall or with friends. You could play 1
against 2, and whoever used this pass would get one extra point,
so it would be a fun competition between the 3 of you.

- Chopped pass
The characteristic of this style is that we must throw the ball looking for it to
bounce on the ground before being received. This causes the opponent to have
more difficulties to cut it and more facilities to capture for the partner. The Video to improve:

reach the receiver, making it easier for the defender to intercept it.

Tactics: the chopped pass is a great resource. Since it allows the receiver,
especially in situations of cuts to the basket, back gates or in short distances
and positions close to the rim, an easier reception by having more time to
react, after bouncing on the ground, than if it were a chest pass, much more
direct, and, if it lagged a bit behind, almost impossible to catch

To improve:
When you have already practiced this pass (the wall is your best ally for
mastering it), make sure to always keep in mind the distance between you and
your partner. And also give the chopped pass with the ball coming out at the
waist, not before. An exercise that I suggest to improve both, the pass and the
catch is doing this pass with 3 or more people at the same time, I mean,
everyone passes the ball to the next person at the same time, and everyone
catches it from the person before at the same time, so that when you are
playing a real match you aren’t caught off guard
- 'Baseball' pass
Technique: To give a good baseball pass, remember these two
points: prepare the ball and throw the ball with the help of your
body. First, prepare the ball. Bend your knees and move the
foot opposite your passing hand forward. The shoulders should
point towards the touch line. Hold the ball with both hands.
Throw the ball at the same time as transferring the weight of
the body from the back leg to the one we had in front of. We
release the ball with a full extension of the arm and let the back
leg follow the impulse of the body, so that our whole body
finishes in a balanced way.

Tactics: This passing style is commonly used to initiate a play

on the fast break; especially if we want to throw the ball to a Video explanation of

teammate who is far away, due to the force applied to the ball. https://youtu.be/CcWJb5egvX8

To improve:
I think the best way to practice it deliberately is the exercise
that I proposed for the chopped pass. In a game, whoever gives
this pass would get more points.
2.2Complex Passes
- Pass hand in hand
Technique: With our teammate a few inches from us, we
hand him the ball - better if he is coming from the
opposite direction - so that there is no defender between
us. This pass is very difficult to intercept without fouling
(unless we make a mistake).

Tactics: At times when the opposing defense is very

suffocating and we cannot risk taking a pass for fear of
losing the ball, it is highly recommended to make use of
this resource.

To improve and practice: Play a 2 against 1, but start in

this way, so that you are obligated to do this pass. Try it
with both hands, giving it with the right and then with left.
Try to receive it as well.
- Behind the back

Technique: It consists of driving the ball with the wrist, at the same
time that we pass our arm around our back, so that we pass through
there. It seems simple to execute, but it is not advisable to use this
kind of pass if we have not previously practiced it.

Tactics: Especially effective if we are on the move, this type of pass

baffles the opponent by catching him off guard, so he can hardly react
in time to intercept it. It’s important not to make eye contact with the
person whom we are passing the ball.

To improve/practice: before trying this pass, it’s very important to

master the change of hands through the back (as in the photo in the
right), in both ways: from the left hand to the right one and the other
way around.
Exercise 1: Auto passes from the back against a wall, I am moving
away to add difficulty.
Exercise 2: Circles bouncing the ball around the waist without

- Pass 'hook'
Technique: it is like making a hook to the basket, only the objective is not
to score, but to get the ball to a teammate. Bend your arm and contract
your shoulder slightly. Use the other arm to balance yourself but never to
touch the ball. Release the ball at the highest point of your arm movement
and use your wrist to roll the ball backward. You can jump if you think its
necessary, or the distance is large.

Tactics: It seeks to send the ball, preventing the opposing players from Video that explains the
having scope to block or intercept the pass. technique:
https://youtu.be/I2uY2MMfeUE

To improve/practice: In the photo it’s explained better. Still, I’ll try to

explain with words. 3 players (1, 2 and 5) begin to move forward on the
court. The 1st outside player passes the ball (with a hook pass) to the 2nd
player in the center line. As soon as the ball is received, the midline player
returns the ball to the same player on the sideline. The 1st middle player
then turns to the other side and receives a pass from the 5th other outside
player and immediately returns the ball to him. Outside lane players may
use 1 - 2 strides to avoid jogging. Try it with the right, but also with the
left, knowing every pass with both hands is important during the game.
- Pass with the elbow
Technique:
1. Maintain a balanced posture.
2. Hold the ball with one hand, in such a way that it appears that a pass is being made from
behind the back.
3. Throw the ball as if it were a pass from behind the back.
4. Hit the ball behind our back with the elbow opposite to the direction in which we want the
pass to go.

Tactics: this pass is especially useful in transition - or when we gain an advantage over the
opponent - but it’s really difficult to execute. It was popularized by Jason "White Chocolate"
Williams during his time with the Sacramento Kings. Here’s the repetition: https://
youtu.be/JQHtfUpB2tU?t=27

To practice: The elbow pass is, from a coordination point of view, the most difficult to master. If
you don’t practice basketball professionally it’s not important to mater it, just know that it exists.
But if you want it here are some exercises:
1. Get a basket ball and take it behind the back, hitting it against your elbow/ the low part of the
triceps (you’ll get more control). This will be useful to understand the strength with which you Video to improve:
need to move your elbow. Do it many times, and then start throwing it. https://youtu.be/0v0-xOD2V3c
2. Practice with someone. So that you know how much you need to turn your head to make eye
contact with the person whom you are really passing the ball.
What other things can we do during the game related to
passes?
Blind pass or no look pass.
It is used to catch the defender off guard, and not get the pass intervened. As the name
suggests, it is a pass that is given without looking where you are going to pass the ball. It is
a pass widely used by certain professional players, who have great control of the ball and
great effectiveness in passing. Don’t try it if you haven’t mastered the basic ones.
Pass to touch.
The pass to touch could enter within a "tap", that is, there is no control of the ball. It is
given by hitting the ball with the open hand. It is a fast and efficient pass in certain
situations, but with a large percentage of error.
