GIORDANO BRUNO

1548 –1600
WAS AN ITALIAN DOMINICAN FRIAR,
PHILOSOPHER, MATHEMATICIAN, POET,
COSMOLOGICAL THEORIST, AND HERMETIC
OCCULTIST
He proposed that the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets, and he raised the
possibility that these planets might foster life of their own, a cosmological position known as
cosmic pluralism. He also insisted that the universe is infinite and could have no "center".

For his ideas far from
Catholic hermeticism,
Starting in 1593, Bruno
was tried for heresy by the
Roman Inquisition on
charges of denial of several
core Catholic doctrines.

The Inquisition found him

guilty, and he was burned
at the stake in Rome's
Campo de' Fiori in 1600
He was one of the victims of abuse by the Catholic Church, which banned all independent
thought and research at the time.

Without his empirical contributions, other

scientists and researchers would not have
continued his work, Some ‘Galileo’ theories
were based on his ideas.
On the 400th anniversary of Bruno's death, in 2000, Pope John
Paul II made a general apology for "the use of violence that
some have committed in the service of truth“

Why do I admire him?

It represents that we must defend our ideals and thoughts despite what others indicate.

It reminds me that we must question and evaluate what we take for granted, not settle for something that is
dictated by law.
