✘ Conditional tenses are used to speculate about what could
happen, what might have happened, and what we wish
would happen.

✘ A conditional sentence is a sentence that expresses a


condition. A condition is something that can only happen
IF something else occurs.

✘ A conditional sentence contains an independent clause and


a dependent clause that almost always begins with “if.”

Conditional Sentence Example
• If I save enough, I can go on vacation.
The dependent clause is “If I save enough.”
The independent clause is “I can go on vacation.”

• You can have dessert if you finish your homework.


The dependent clause is “if you finish your homework.”
The independent clause is “you can have dessert.”

If Clause + Suggestions
✘ This if clause is used to provide a suggestion about the
action that must be taken if you want an event to occur. It
should be noted that what distinguishes a suggestion from
a warning is imperative. Suggestions can be done or not
(depending on the level), while warnings must be done
because it is a consequence. Therefore, suggestions use
should/ought to/had better.
✘ Should = strong
✘ Ought to = stronger
✘ Had better = very strong
