Explain the Doppler effect.Find an expression when

(1)the observer is moving away from the source and

(2)the observer is moving towards from the source.

DOPPLER EFFECT
The change in frequency of a wave for an observer moving relative
to its source is called Doppler Effect.
It is named after the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler and
originated in 1842.
A common example of Doppler effect is the change of pitch heard when a
vehicle sounding a horn approaches and recedes from an observer.

It applies to all waves including:

1)Light waves
2)Sound waves
3)Water waves

APPLICATIONS:
1) Doppler effect is used to detect the speed of automobiles.
2) Doppler effect is applied to track the earth satellite.
3) Doppler effect is applied to estimate the speed of stars and planets.
CASE 1: The observer is moving away from the source

Source velocity,0 Observer velocity,

In this case,Frequency(f) is decreasing.

 Apparent frequency,

=
=
=

Now, v-v
1
f

So,Apparent frequency is less than actual

frequency.
CASE 2:The observer is moving towards from the source.

Source velocity,0 Observer velocity,

In this case,Frequency(f) is increasing.

Apparent frequency,

=
=
=

Now, v+>v
>1
>f

So,Apparent frequency is greater than actual
frequency.
