Lecture 3
What is Internet of Things (IoT)
• A growing number of physical objects are being
connected to the Internet at a high rate realizing
the idea of the Internet of Things (IoT).
Architecture of Internet of Things (IoT)
• Internet of Things technology has a wide variety of applications and
use of Internet of Things is growing so faster.

•  IoT has not a standard defined architecture of working which is

strictly followed universally.

• The architecture of IoT depends upon its functionality and

implementation in different sectors.
Architecture of
IoT
Architecture of IoT cont..
• Sensing Layer –
Sensors, actuators, devices are present in this Sensing layer. These
Sensors or Actuators accepts data(physical/environmental
parameters), processes data and emits data over network.

• Network Layer –
Internet/Network gateways, Data Acquisition System (DAS) are
present in this layer. DAS performs data aggregation and conversion
function (Collecting data and aggregating data then converting analog
data of sensors to digital data etc).
Architecture of IoT cont..
• Data processing Layer –
This is processing unit of IoT ecosystem. Here data is analyzed and pre-
processed before sending it to data center from where data is accessed by
software applications often termed as business applications where data is
monitored, and managed and further actions are also prepared.

• Application Layer –
This is last layer of 4 stages of IoT architecture. Data centers or cloud is
management stage of data where data is managed and is used by end-
user applications like agriculture, health care, aerospace, farming,
defense, etc.
Applications of IoT
• The Internet of Things platform can be used to
accumulate data related to a specific
geographic location using remote monitoring
tools and perform analytics so that early
warnings of a disaster can be found out.

• IoT can have a major impact when it comes to

remote health monitoring. Even though the patient is
on the move, his vitals can be continuously sent to
the doctors with the help of IoT platform.
Applications of IoT cont..
• The task of irrigation can be automated with the
help of IoT. A set of sensors such as light,
humidity, temperature can be used to
continuously monitor the field conditions.

• Smart Home clearly stands out, ranking as highest

Internet of Things application on all measured
channels. More than 60,000 people currently search
for the term “Smart Home” each month. This is not a
surprise. The IoT Analytics company database for
Smart Home includes 256 companies and startups.
