INTRODUCTION :-

• Hawk-Eye is a computer system used in cricket, tennis and other

sports to track the path of the ball and display a record of its most
statistically likely path as a moving image

• Hawk-Eye as the most innovative technology provider in sports

broadcasting and is a development that will reinforce the groups
presence and influence
HISTORY
• It is primarily used by the majority of television networks to track
the trajectory of balls in fight.

• It was developed by engineers at Roke Manor Reasearch Limited

of UK in 2001.

• A patent was submitted by Dr Paul Hawkins and David sherry.

• The system was first used in cricket during a Test match between
pakistan and England at Lord’s Cricket Ground, on 21 April 2001.

• It was first used in tennis in 2006 US open.

COMPONENTS

 The Hawk-Eye system consists of two significant parts

 Tracking System
 - Camera
 - Speed gun.

 Video Replay System

TRACKING SYSTEM
 The system will automatically calculate the following information:

 The speed of the ball leaving the bowler’s hand.

 The swing of the ball from the bowler’s hand to where the ball pitched.

 How much the ball bounced.

 How much the ball deviated sideways off the wicket.

 A prediction of where the ball would have passed the stumps.

HAWK EYE CAMERA
 Hawkeye cameras placed high above the court
to track the trajectory (path folllowed) of the
ball.

 It can point out the bounce of the ball upto

2.6mm precision

 The cameras record the movement of the ball at

the rate of 340 frames per second.
PRINCIPLE
 This is essentially visual processing, using
cameras, not lasers. There are 10 caliberated
cameras stationed at strategic points around
the ground. As a ball is bowled each camera
recognises the ball in the image. A 3D
trajectory of the ball is created from the image
data using a process called kalman Filtering.
From this 3D trajectory, you can determine
the speed, angle and deviation of the ball’s
flight.
WORKING
VISUAL REPRESENTATION
ACCURACY
• During ITF Testing in 2006 Hawk-Eye made the correct call in
100% of all tests, showing an average error of 2.6mm.
• Tests have been conducted outdoors, encompassing situations
that take the following factors into consideration:
 Wind (and therefore camera wobble)
 Bright sunlight at different times of the day
 Shadows covering part or the majority of the court
 Dark or overcast conditions
 Artificial floodlights.
 Getting the trajectory of the balls before it happens
APPLICATIONS
• LBW Decision
• Wagon Wheel
• Pitch Maps
• De Spin
• It is used to retreive the enemy location from far way distance
without coming to their notice.
• Used in automobile Industry
• It is also implemented in Computer games to give reality to the
game.

WAGON WHEEL
IMAGES CAPTURED USING HAWK EYE

These 3 images shows that the ball is actually inside the line. The
ball touched the line and dragged about 10cm outside the line. So it
seems to be outside when seen with our eye.
ADVANTAGES
• This technology is being used in many sports like cricket, tennis and
snooker.

• It is also a great tool which can be used by players, statisticians,

tacticians, coaches to analyze previous games and come up with
strategies for subsequent ones.

• It reduces the human efforts and increases accuracy of decision.

CONCLUSION
• After all the tests that have been conducted on this technology, it
has always come out successful and it promises to be boon for
the world of sports and now it is up to the different councils to
decide whether to use this technology or not

• This technology has met the high relality and accuracy features.

• As the system runs in real time, there is no extra time required

to see the visualizations and graphics.
