effects of vaccination
BCG
The wheal raised by injection disappears in about half an hour
A small red tender swelling about 10mm across, appears at the injection site
after approximately 2 wks.
After 2-3 wks , the swelling may become a small abscess w/in then ulcerates
The ulcer heals by itself and leaves a scar.The course from vaccination to scar
takes about 12 wks
Side effects
• 1.Koch’s phenomenon
• An acute inflammatory reaction apearing w/in 2-
4 days of vaccination
• Management:
• No mngt. Needed
• 2. Deep abscess at injection site or lymph
nodes(due to subq or deeper injection)
• Management:
• Incision and drainage
• 3.Indolent ulceration
• An ulcer w/c persist after 12 wks from date of
vaccination or an ulcer more than 10mm.deep
• Management:
• Treat with INH powder
• 4. Glandular enlargement
• Glands draining the injection site may become
enlarged
• Management:
• Treat as deep abscess
DPT
• Side effects:
• 1.fever
• Many children may develop fever after
injection and lasts only for 1 day.
• Fever that last more than 24 hrs. ,is not
due to the vaccine but to other causes
• Mngt.
• TSB,give antipyretic
Side effects
• 2. local soreness
• Pain or swelling in the area where injection was
given
• Starts at early after injection,then it is only due to
the vaccine
• Mngt:
• Warm compress,
• Assure mother that may disappear 3-4 days
• 3. Abscess
• Wrong tech./unsterile
• Management:
• Incision and drainage
• 4. Convulsion
• Rare.occur more in 3 mos. Of age
• Due to pertussis component of vaccine
• Management:
• Give proper care,do not continue the normal
course
OPV
• Usually none
measles
• Fever and rashes may develop 5-7 days
from the time of vaccination.
• Fever last 1-3 days.sometimes mild rash:
• Mngt:
• antipyretic
Tetanus toxoid
• Local soreness
• May develop pain, redness and swelling at
the site of the injection
• Management:
• Cold compress
• No tx.needed
