Plutonium
• 1. Plutonium was used in several of the
first atomic bombs and is still used in
nuclear weapons.
• 2. Plutonium is a radioactive,
silver metal.
• 3. Plutonium is most dangerous if it is
inhaled. Inhaling just 20 milligrams of
plutonium would kill you in a
few months
Gold
• 1. The element symbol for gold—Au—comes
from the old Latin name for gold, aurum, which
means "shining dawn" or "glow of sunrise."
• 2. Gold is the most malleable element. A single
ounce of gold can be beaten into a 300-square-
foot sheet.
• 3. Nearly all the gold on Earth came from
meteorites that bombarded the planet over
200 million years after it formed.
• 1. Thallium has a low melting point and will tarnish in air to a bluish-gray oxide,
and it is so soft that it can be easily cut with a knife.

Thallium • 2. Thallium is used in photoresistors because of its electrical-conductivity changes

when exposed to infrared light.
• 3. Sir William Crookes named it after the Greek word “thallos,” meaning a green
shoot or twig referring to the bright green spectral emission line he observed.
Mercury
• 1. Mercury is the only metal that is a liquid
at standard temperature and pressure.
• 2. Vials of pure mercury have been found
in Egyptian tombs from the 1500s BCE.
• 3. Mercury and all its compounds
are known to be highly toxic; it was
considered therapeutic throughout much
of history.
• 1. Boron is used in making nuclear energy. It is very good at absorbing
neutrons, keeping nuclear reactors from going super critical.
• 2. Boron, in its crystalline form, is the second-hardest element behind
Boron carbon.
• 3. Boron is a very common household element that is found in many
detergents.
• 1. Presently, the only use for
oganesson is research into the
element’s properties and perhaps

Oganesson work to synthesize new superheavy

elements.
• 2. Oganesson does not occur naturally.
The only source of the element is a
nuclear research laboratory.
• 3.If oganesson forms a gas, it will be
one of the densest gases ever known.
