What is Data Communication?
• Exchange of data between two devices via some form of
transmission medium.
• In simple language it is transmission of data from one place to
another over some type of medium.
• The effectiveness of data communications system depends on
four fundamental characteristics
a) Delivery
b) Accuracy
c) Timeliness
d) Jitter
Characteristics of data
communication
• Delivery – Message should be delivered to the right
person or device.
• Accuracy – There should be accuracy in message i.e. it
should be unmodified.
• Timeliness – Message should be deliever on time there
should not be delay.
• Jitter – In the transmission process there may be some
delay to travel medium. The variation in delay is jitter.
Jitter creates problem with audio and video sent by sender
as they require data on time.
Components of Data Communication
1) Message- The data which is sent or received is called message. It may be in
the form of text, images, audio and video.
2) Sender – The device which sends message or data is called sender. It contain
computer, sensor, router etc.
3) Receiver – The device which recieve message is called receiver.
4) Transmission Medium – The path between sender and receiver which carries
message is called Transmission medium. It may be coaxial cables, optical
fiber or radio waves.
5) Protocol – The standard set of rules that allow electronic devices to
communicate with each other is called Protocol.
Data flow
Data flow is the direction in which data transmits between two devices. It is of 3
types-
• Simplex - Data flows in only one direction from one device to another. Eg.
Keyboards, Monitor etc.
• Half-duplex - Data flows in both direction but not simultaneously. Device cannot
send or receive data at same time. Eg. Walkie-Talkie.
• Full-duplex – Data flows in both direction simultaneously. Device can send or
receive data at same time. Eg. Telephone.
