ARABIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO MATHEMATICS

There have been many misconceptions of the contributions of

Arabic Society to Mathematics. Many believe that they did little but
translate Greek texts for later use by European. This however is
inaccurate. Arabs not only translated many text but they also developed
new kinds of Math, came up with new ideas of Math, came up with
new ideas for the Number System, and many other things. Their
contributions have helped shape Modern Mathematics.
DESCRIPTIONS
 The house of wisdom is founded in Baghdad in 776 B.C.
 Translation of many Greek works on math begins in the house of wisdom.
 Algebra is developed, along with developments in the number system, number
theory, and astronomy.
 Indian numeral system translated and built on and zero is added as a placeholder.
AL - KHWARZIMI
Translated many Greek texts
Developed the system of Algebra which he wrote a
treatise.
Gave the name Algebra
CALIPH AL MA’MUN
Set up the house of wisdom in Baghdad.
His “house” became center for translation and research in
the Arab World .
He had the first major library since Alexandria.
AL - KARAJI
First person to completely free Algebra from Geometry.
Used Arithmetic operations that are still at the core of Modern Algebra.
Introduced monomials: x, x2x3… 1/x, 1/x2, 1/x3
Started a school of Algebra that flourished for several hundred years.
OMAR KHAYYUM
Completely classified cubic equations.
Used intersection of conic sections.
Gave a full description of algebraic solutions to cubic equations
THABBIT IBN QURRA
Educated by Bana Musa brothers
Discovered a theorem where two numbers that each is the
sum of the proper divisors of others.
AL - HAYTHEM
• Made the first attempt to classify all even perfect numbers as 2k-1 (2k -1)
where 2k - 1
ARABIC NUMERICAL SYSTEM

The Arabic Number System came from India and was developed and added by the
Arabs
Three types of arithmetic used:
a. Finger reckoning: used by fingers counting and numbers written in words/letters
mainly used in business transactions
b. Sexagesimal: numbers are shown by letters/words
c. Numerals: indian numerals and fractions using nine signs and decimal point ( 1- 9)
