 The Tribals who are socially and
economically marginalized are called
Scheduled Tribes. 4
 People are often together with the
Scheduled Tribes in the eighth schedule of
the Indian Constitution.

 Number of traits have customarily been


used for establishing tribal identify.

 These include language, social


organization , religious affiliation ,
economic pattern , geographical location
and self-identification.

 There are over 500 different tribal

 The Gonds of Madhya Pradesh and
Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Andhra 6
Pradesh, the Bhils of Rajasthan, Gujrat,
and Santhals of Jharkhand, Odisha and
West Bengal are among the largest tribes
groups in our country.

 The tribes that inhabit the Andaman


Islands are known as the Great
Andamanese, the Jarwa, the Onge and
the Sentinelese.

 These tribes are thought to have travelled


to the Andaman Islands from Africa
almost 60,000 years ago.

Marginalisation
 The term minority refers to communities numerically 8
less in number in relation to the rest of the population.

 They are often more at risk and likely to be dominated


and oppressed by the majority.

 Therefore, their interests have to be protected as the


lack of strengths in numbers may influence their
access to resources ,opportunity and power.

 The Indian Constitution provides for the protection of


minority communities against the possibility of being
culturally dominated by the majority.

 One of the ways in which it does this is by


emphasising the need to preserve ,protect and promote
the religion, culture, and script of all minorities.
