What is Author’s Purpose
 Author’s purpose tells you why the author
wrote the story, advertisement, directions, etc.

 There are three main types of author’s purpose:


 To Inform
 To Persuade
 To Entertain
To Inform
 An author may write to give you facts or true
information about a subject The author
wrote this to
EXAMPLE of writing to INFORM inform you
about lions
A lion is one of four types of large cats. The male
lion can weigh up to 550 pounds, and can be
identified by his mane. Female do not have a mane.
Wild lions live in Africa and Asia. Lions normally live
between ten to fourteen years in the wild. Female
lions are usually the hunters, and go in packs to find
their families’ meals
To Persuade
 Other authors may write to try and get you to
do something or buy something

To Entertain
 Some authors write fiction stories or stories
that are not true. You read these stories for
fun! Ahh…The author wrote

EXAMPLE of writing to ENTERTAIN with his story
Justin was so excited about his birthday next week. He
told his mom he wanted ice skates for his birthday after
watching his friends play ice hockey. On the day of his
birthday, he unwrapped a new pair of ice skates, threw on
his jacket, and ran out the door to the ice rink. When he
got on the ice, Justin made it about two glides before he
fell on his face
