What would happen if we halved these shapes

The area of a triangle is half the area of the big shape, so:

Area of triangle = base x height ÷ 2

Example: Sam cuts grass at £0.10 per square
metre.
How much does Sam earn cutting this area?

Let’s break the area into two parts:

 Part A is a square:
→ Area of A = a² = 20m x 20m = 400m²

Part B is a triangle viewed sideways. It has a base of 20m and a height of

14m.
→ Area of B = x b x h = x 20 x 14 = 140m²

So the total area is:

→ Area = Area of A + Area of B = 400m 140m² = 540m²

Sam earns £0.10 per square metre

→ Sam earns £0.10 x 540m² = £54

2 Find volume and surface area for cubes and cuboids

Volume is the amount of space an

object takes up.

Surface Area is the total area

across the surface.

you see the same ‘cross
section’ anywhere you
slice it.

How many cubes is each cross-section (i.e. layer) made up of?
