TARTER ACTIVITY TITLE

If triangles had the side lengths (below) would the triangles be

considered congruent?

All corresponding Hence the angles

Hence
Yes sides the same are determined
length by the sides Congruent.
Learn
Triangles, Construction and Loci
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

• Recognise and identify congruent triangles

• Construct triangles with a compass and ruler

• Construct various loci of a point using a compass, protractor and a ruler

Key Words

Loci (movement of a point),

construction, triangles, congruent
GOLDEN LINK

ek 10 we looked at congruent shapes.

finition: Shapes are congruent if they are exactly the same size and
ape. They can be flipped.
How to decide if shapes are congruent?

If all the sides and all the angles of two shapes being compared are the same then we can
consider the shapes to be congruent.

However, we do not need all of this information to make a decision!

Have a look at the pictures below and decide if the information given will prove a triangle is congruent?
scussion: Which description is required to prove two triangles are
ngruent?

Congruent (SSS) Congruent (SAS)

No as the sides could

still be different lengths Congruent (ASA)
(similar)

Congruent: Extra one –

No, as this can produce
Right Angle, hypotenuse
different size triangles.
and other side (RHS)
To prove triangles are congruent the following must be true.

• SAS two sides and the included angles are the same

• ASA two angles and the included side are the same

• 3 sides are the same

• Right angle, hypotenuse and another side the same

isecting lines and angles

The keyword bisect means to ‘chop in half’.

The key word Perpendicular means two lines drawn at right angles (90⁰)

Hence to draw a perpendicular bisector is to draw two lines that cut half way at 90⁰

eg

Construct the perpendicular bisector of the line PQ

Note: Every point on this

new line is the exact same
distance (equidistant) from
point P as it is from point Q!

Construct an angle bisector for the angle made by
lines PQ and PR

Crucial: You must not change the

width of the compasses at this
