Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers

• Add/drop of individual wavelengths at intermediate sites: flexible express
wavelength switching between any node directions (no OEO conversion)
• OADM can be Fixed (FOADM) or Remotely reconfigurable (ROADM);
• Multi-degree MD-(R)OADMs extend support for nodal degree >2 and are
suitable for mesh networks

ROADMs and Multi-Degree ROADMs:

OTT
MD-ROADM • The heart of the (MD-) ROADM:
WSS: Wavelength Selective

ROADM Switch module
• Transparent wavelength
switching for each of the
40/80/96 wavelengths
• flexible channel rates (flexible

service 10G/40G/100G(/400G+)
MD-ROADM OLR MD-ROADM

MD-ROADM – Multi-Degree Remotely Configurable OADM

• fully remotely configurable add/drop or pass-through for any wavelength
• end-to-end service commissioning without visiting intermediate sites
• colorless, directionless, and contentionless add/drop for all fiber directions including
support for flexible wavelength grid (flexigrid)
• enabled by ASON / GMPLS control plane for optical service provisioning and restoration
• Integrated VOAs (variable optical attenuators) for automation
• In service upgrade from terminal, to ROADM, to MD-ROADM

 WDM signal enters common port (Input fiber 1)

 WDM filter (grating technology) splits of the DWDM signal into the individual wavelengths
 Beam steering devices (MEMS filters as shown above, or LCOS chip) switch wavelengths
 WDM filter again picks up wavelengths and aggregates into output fiber
 Reverse operation possible as well

ROADMs and MD-ROADMs go colorless (C)

 In legacy, non colorless ROADMs, physical

add/drop ports are assigned to fixed, specific
wavelengths
 In colorless ROADMs, ports can be tuned to
arbitrary wavelengths by software command Wavelength
blocking: λ1
 This allows to tune the wavelengths of the
already in use
transponders and the add/drop port remotely
 Benefits:
 Additional degree of freedom for
Service A Service B
reorganizing the optical layer on λ1 on λ1λ2
 More flexibility for optical restoration
with GMPLS (see example on the right) Two services

 Simple/Fast automatic provisioning of network,

services
use. Therefore Service B has
to be tuned from λ1 to λ2.

ROADMs and MD-ROADMs go directionless (D)

 Legacy, directional MD-ROADMs have

dedicated add/drop port groups for each
direction
 To re-route around a local, nearest span
failure, the direction of an add/drop port must Direction switching
needed in both
be switchable: directionless switching ingress nodes.
 Directionless switching is therefore needed for
automatic restoration with a GMPLS control
plane, or remote provisioning using pre-
installed transponders. After a fiber break, the service
has to be re-routed over the
rail on the left. To this end, the
wavelength has to switched in
both ingress nodes.

ROADMs and MD-ROADMs go contentionless

Service B Service A
 Standard MD-ROADM nodes do not allow to on λ1
use the same wavelength twice in the same on λ1
add/drop path.
 This may lead to contention of add/drop
Wavelength
wavelengths. I.e. it is not possible to drop contention: λ1 is
another wavelength, even though the MD- already dropped.
ROADM has to yet exhausted it’s capacity
 This can be resolved by a specific
architecture in the add/drop path: the MD-
ROADM becomes a CDC MD-ROADM: Services
