Definitions Around Link Control
• Optical link control is intended to ensure optimized optical link operation in any
link state
• Goal is to maintain sufficient link performance and consequently an equally
distributed OSNR level at each channel’s tail end (OSNR at electrical receiver or
regenerator locations)
• Link control covers several link oriented tasks:
Preparation for start-up; Channel power adjustment; Link startup; Link running; Tilt
control; Pre-emphasis control; Add-channel control; Drop control; Link shut-down
• Pre-emphasis optimizes the performance of all active optical channels by equally
distributing the OSNR of each channel at the end of an optical link. This is
achieved by manipulating the input power levels of the individual optical channels
(Nokia Siemens Networks patented solution)
• Tilt control corrects the amplifier cards tilt settings per directions of a pre-
emphasis section

Link control options

Two different types of power

control exist in
case of automated and non-
automated core networks Metro Standard Metro Enhanced
ONN power control ONN ONN
power control

• Enhanced Link Control

– VOAs required
– Measurements required at one or both ends of a pre-emphasis section
– output power control of amplifiers
– MCP for automatic, continuous per channel power optimization
– OSC between ONNs

• Standard Link Control for Metro applications

– Fixed attenuators or O08VA, even mixed
– Adjustment after on-site OSA-measurement at the booster
– only gain control of amplifiers
– no automated channel power optimization
– OSC or GCC0 between ONNs

Link Section vs. Pre-emphasis Section

• A link section comprises of a set of adjacent optical fiber spans without channel
count change
• A pre-emphasis section comprises of a set of adjacent optical fiber spans
containing the longest optical path (from OTT/OADM to the next OTT/OADM);
at pre-emphasis section terminals, all optical channels must be demultiplexed as
access to each individual channel/ subband power is required

Enhanced Preemphasis – automated

 Combines enhanced preemphasis and automation

 Enables automatic and continuous 2-site measurement in addition with
tilt control without external equipment or user interaction
 Measurement and power adjustment of enhanced preemphasis is done
consecutively in the time frame of minutes
 Local and remote measurement performed on MCP404 (Channel Power
Monitor) (saves OSA’s)
 VOAs required
 For standard application 1x MCP card per nodal degree 2
 PXC 80 channels: 1 x MCP card per degree 1

Allows for full automation over maximum reach

without additional penalty

DCN-Basics

The internal DCN refers to the data communication network used by the NEs to communicate
with each other. While the customer DCN is separated from the internal DCN operation,
following information about the internal DCN is necessary for commissioning:
• Internal DCN IP addresses and the mapping to the NE name/location
• Internal IP addresses within NE and the mapping to the subrack/card/slot
• Internal DCN configurations, e.g. locations of DHCP-, NTP-, ftp-server, etc.
• Internal DCN performance statistics
• Customer DCN networking information (e.g. northbound IP address, default gateway,
mask …), customer FTP server IP address

Means of communication between NEs are:

• Optical supervisory channel (OSC) on fiber links between NEs
• Ethernet interfaces (100BT) between distinct NEs at one location
• Embedded communication channels (GCC0) on transponders

Default mode of communication between NEs is to operate OSC and Ethernet interfaces in a
switching domain with dynamic assignment of IP addresses via “DHCP”

Aspects of DCN configuration

IP Address assignment and distribution

DHCP servers are used to automatically assign IP addresses to individual network
elements. DHCP servers take IP addresses from a configurable pool of IP
addresses.

Gateway Function (GF)

The gateway function can be activated on any NE. No separate hardware is
needed. Usually there will be dedicated gateway NEs, which also handle DHCP
server and NE detection function and host the FTP and NTP servers.
The provisioning of the gateway function parameter is assumed to be a manual
procedure. The planner has to identify the GF-NE that is considered to be the
DHCP server (for both primary and secondary).

21 © Nokia Siemens Networks Presentation / Author / Date
Time Synchronization

The network element needs an external time-reference-source to derive its internal

clock. The referenced clock will be used for time stamping log entries, issuing events
and more.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used for achieving time synchronization within the
network.
For dedicated 'permanent' gateways, the user has the possibility to configure its
external NTP servers. For regular NEs (including any temporary gateways) their NTP
servers are internally set via DHCP, the dedicated Gateways in the network serve as
NTP servers to them.

Up to three NTP servers can be configured for an NE. If no NTP server is currently
available, the network element goes into a free-running mode, depending only on its
internal clock.

– 8 CWDM, R4.3: 18 CWDM wavelengths, 40 DWDM wavelengths, CWDM/DWDM mix on
same link
• Shelf options
– 19’’ 1HU filterpack shelf for CWDM and DWDM filters (unmanaged)
– flatpack or main shelf for DWDM filters (managed) and channel cards
– AC power integrated in flatpack, external converter for main shelf (managed by TIF)
• Filters options
– CWDM: bi-directional 1ch/4ch filter for filterpack shelf, Y-patch cord (CWDM filter in
connector plug)
– DWDM: bi-directional 1ch/4ch filter for filterpack shelf, bi-directional 4ch filter and uni-
directional 40ch(AWG) filters for flatpack / main shelf,
• Transponder options
– Alien wavelength supported for colored SFPs, XFPs
– CWDM/DWDM SFP/XFP on client side of a DWDM transponder/muxponder in hub node
– I04T2G5 2.5G multipurpose Muxponder with integrated protection
– I05AD10G multi-service 10G Add/Drop Multiplexer with integrated protection
– I01T10G, I08T10G, I04TQ10G 10G Transponder and Muxponder
– Client side of I04T40G 40G Muxponder
– 40/80km variants for SFP and XFPs
• Management
– SON (Stand-alone node): No TransNet planning, no ncf, but LCT management
– Inband management channel via GCC0

Management of non-amp. / passive WDM in hiT
7300
• Purely passive assemblies w/o optical amplifiers
• Configuration variant for flatpack / main shelf: Stand-alone optical node (SON)
– LCT management via SNMP
▪ no optical planning needed
▪ no Network Configuration File (NCF)
▪ Remote access through TNMS
– Inband management channel via GCC0 of transponders. Advantages:
▪ No OSC needed
▪ Lowest possible complexity and cost, highest availability (OSC needs additional cards,
filters, lasers, receivers)
▪ Note:
• Shelf controller connects internal DCN to either OSC or GCC0, depending on application
• OSC is only required for amplified links due to laser safety
– Managed filters:
▪ F04MDU, F04MDN, F08SB, F40 (AWG)
▪ No predefined filter sequence
• Filters in Y-patchcords and 1HU 19’’ filterpack unmanaged

Benefits of hiT 7300 non-amplified WDM

• Use standard hiT 7300 components:

– no additional spares, same shelf, controller, card pool as for amplified links
– No special cards for CPE application
– Managed filters for non-amplified DWDM
• Inband management without OSC
– Lower complexity, less components to fail, lower cost
• Simple management
– No planning required, plug any card any slot, no ncf
• Optimize layer interconnection
– By using colored IF in client ports of trans/muxponders feeding into
amplified links
• Optimum configuration for protected WDM CPE
– Flatpack (AC) shelf offers four slots: two transponders, one bi-directional
4ch filter, one free slot for upgrade

Standalone Optical Node (SON)

• Purely passive assemblies w/o optical amplifiers:

– Stand-alone Transponder-NE for non-hiT 7300-DWDM
– Low-cost stand-alone terminal for simple Metro-DWDM
– Remote Terminal
– No predefined filter sequence but any filter structure possible using
F04MDU, F04MDN, and F08SB
• Support of F40 AWG filter
