NOTICE ESD hazard

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can permanently destroy semiconductor components!

Observe the following ESD instructions to avoid damage to electrostatic-sensitive components:

 Assume that all solid-state components and assemblies are sensitive to ESD.
 Wear working garment made of 100% cotton to avoid electrostatic charging.
 Touch the circuit packs at the edges or the insertion and removal facilities only.
 Touch the SFP or XFP modules at the edges only.
 Ensure that the rack is grounded.
 Wear a properly grounded ESD wrist strap (connected to the rack ESD bonding point, for
example).
 Work in an ESD safe work area or workstation. An ESD safe work area should be equipped with a
grounded ESD wrist strap and a grounded ESD mat or ESD dissipative work surface.
 A grounded ESD mat or work surface must have a ground cord with one end attached to the mat
or surface and the other end connected to a ground point (the rack ESD bonding point, for
example). Do not work with ESD sensitive devices unless the area is properly equipped.
 Conductively connect all test equipment and trolleys to the rack ESD bonding point.
 Store and ship circuit packs and components in their shipping packaging. Circuit packs and
components must be packed and unpacked only at workplaces suitably protected against build-
up of charge.
 Whenever possible, maintain the relative humidity of air above 20%.

2
LASER Safety
 The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS system complies with the regulations FDA/CDRH 21 CFR 1040.10 and
1040.11 issued by the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) as a Class I laser product and with the IEC/UL/CSA/EN 60825-1 standards as a
Class 1 Optical Fiber Telecommunication laser product.
 The system has been designed to help ensure that the operating personnel are not endangered by
laser radiation during normal system operation. The safety measures specified in the FDA/CDRH
regulations and the international standards IEC 60825-Part 1 and 2 respectively are met.
 The following laser warning label or similar (not to scale) is part of the multilabel that is affixed on
the rear of the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 or 1830 PSS-16 subrack.

EPT Engineering and Planning Tool
 The 1830 PSS Engineering Tool (EPT) is used to design the networks composed of
Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-36/32/16, 1830 PSS-4, and 1830 PSS-1 network
elements (NEs).
 It supports initial designs as well as incremental additions to existing networks.
Through its interface with the Network Management System, design information
produced by the EPT is downloaded to individual NEs to facilitate system turn-up.

 The EPT is a standalone Windows™ application with a Graphical User Interface

(GUI) capable of capturing network requirements and synthesizing network
solutions. Given the complex nature of capturing network requirements, the EPT
is capable of operating in the following ways:
 Fully automatic network design
synthesis
 Automatic design synthesis with
manual override
 Fully manual design synthesis
 Phased design that enforces in-service
upgrades from one phase to another
 “What-if” scenarios to quantify how
future traffic patterns operate in the
design

78
EPT Overview
 The ENGINEERING AND PLANNING TOOL simplifies the front-end process of designing 1830 PSS networks:
• Designs deployable networks
• Serves novice users by providing a GUI, automatic NE configuration.
• Provides reports to validate the network design matches the intent.
• Planning reports
• Amplifier and DCM Placement
• Bill of materials suitable for ordering purposes
• General network assumptions.
• Installation report…
• Linkage with NMS to speed installation and synchronize design with implementation:
• The EPT creates power settings per site. Both a machine readable (xml) and human readable (xls): (Networkcommissioning.xls)
• The machine readable file is downloaded to NMS. These power settings are downloaded to each NE during the automatic network
commissioning process.

 The EPT is synchronized with 1830 PSS

generic releases; only deployable networks
may be designed.

Day 2 – MODULAR AND NON-MODULAR LD

92
Modular LD Module Amplifiers
Each Ingress LD module
provides an optical
supervisory channel (OSC)
access point.

In 2125A/B uni-directional LD
modules, the OSC SFP is
installed in the front face.

In other LD’s, the OSC fibers

are run internally. With the
2125, the fibers are run
externally and will be part of
the intra-shelf installation
cable run list.

The diagram to the immediate

right shows the external fiber
runs.

The diagram to the far right

shows the internal fiber
connections to the 2125 LD
ports.

93
Non-Modular LD Module Amplifiers
Each LD also contains two MON ports that can be connected to customer monitoring
equipment for monitoring the optical signal after the amplifier and output to the span.

Optional dispersion compensation modules (DCMs) are fibered to the mid-stage access
ports of amplifiers that support mid-stage access.

The number and type of DCM modules needed in particular points in an Alcatel-Lucent 1830
PSS-32/PSS-16 network is determined by the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32/PSS-16 Engineering
and Planning Tool, based on target dispersion map required to support 10G services between
any two points in the DWDM network.

When a DCM is not used, a 10-dB pad is placed on the DCM port using a simplex fiber.

Day 2 –PSS TOPOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE
REVIEW

109
FOADM Topology

 FOADM must be manually managed/configured – power levels are not

automatically adjusted.
 FOADM End Terminals can be auto power managed
 2 Degree + FOADM must be manually power managed

FOADM Configurations:
 FOADM line terminal
 FOADM hub
 Multi-degree FOADM (2 degree, 3 degree)
 Static Filters (SFD-5, SFD-8, SFD-44/44B, SFD-40/40B, SFC-2/4/8)

110
FOADM Architecture Examples

2 Degree FOADM
 Configuration faces both east and west directions. Traffic from the optical lines can be
added or dropped, and at least one single wavelength passes through transparently.

FOADM Hub
 A FOADM hub is a configuration of two lines in a ring where OTs terminate all
wavelengths. No channels cross transparently between these two lines.

111
SFD Cascading 3 Degree FOADM

FOADM 5-channel static-filter architecture (2-

degree)
 Expansion ports can be used to cascade up to 3
filters in any combination, allowing for a
maximum of 15 individually muxed/de-muxed
channels.
 All other channels are band passed through.

3-degree FOADM
 Configuration is a mesh node
with three valid DWDM line
terminals.
 Individual channels enter from
one line and can be added or
dropped, or passed through.

112
TOADM Topology
Tunable Optical Add Drop Mux (TOADM)
 Networks designed such that any wavelength can be added or dropped at any
site, and the network can also be reconfigured in-service to alter the wavelength
routings.

TOADM Configurations:
 TOADM rings
 TOADM linear networks
 Multi-degree TOADMs (1 degree to 8 degree, SFD-44/44B, 40/40B Filters)

TOADM Ring Topology:

 A TOADM ring consists of two-degree TOADM NEs and possibly in-line amplifiers.
 In order to support any-to-any connectivity in the ring, the through path around
the ring is automatically balanced during network commissioning. The automatic
balancing adjusts amplifier gains around the ring through-path to ensure all
channels leaving a given node do so at the designed power level.
 After the ring has been commissioned, automatic power management adapts to
changes in the network to keep a given channel within provisioned ranges in small
variations of 1 – 2 dB. Larger gain variations require end user intervention.
