• Components of project management
• Project management process
WHAT IS A PROJECT ?

All projects are temporary and undertaken

to create a product, service, or result that is - Final year project for
unique. graduate degree

- A network upgrade

A project is a sequence of temporary, - Construct a home

unique, complex and connected activities
- Develop COVID vaccine
having one goal or purpose and that must
be completed by a specific time, within
budget and according to specifications.
HISTORY OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

• Could the Great Wall of China, the pyramids, or Stonehenge have been built without project management?

• It is possible to say that the concept of project management has been around since the beginning of history.
MODERN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

• First Research &

development project during
world war II

• Nuclear weapons

• U.S army corps of

Engineers

• 1939

WHY PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR ME ?
WHY PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR ME ?
ENGINEERING PROJECT MANAGEMENT

• Strategies and tools required to complete project effectively and successfully.

• Solid foundation to give managerial knowledge and leadership skills

• Interpret information, make decisions, solve problems and overcome difficulties

associated with teamwork and communication
A SMALL PROJECT ACTIVITY
A SMALL PROJECT ACTIVITY
A SMALL PROJECT ACTIVITY

Each project results a unique product, service or results

• Houses can be constructed by same/similar materials by same or different

project teams

• Each house gets a unique identity because of is location, design, stakeholders,

budget, circumstances etc.…
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

A project is a series of
activities leading to achieve
a specific outcome within a
set budget and time scale.
PROJECT TRIPLE CONSTRAINTS
PROJECT SCOPE

• The work that needs to be

accomplished to deliver a
product, service, or result
with the specified features
and functions.
PROJECT SCOPE

•The project scope acts as the stage on base of which the project plan is developed.

•It is the aid used by the project managers to define the results of the product produced by the
project for the end users.

•For instance: The scope of a green project activity is to reduce the environmental impact of
greenhouse gases on the environment and to utilize the waste resources to generate some value for
the society by generating electricity from waste gases.

•Project scope is also used as planning tool to track the project success.
PROJECT SCHEDULE

• Scheduling in project management is the listing of activities, deliverables, and milestones within a project.

• A schedule also usually includes the planned start and finish date, duration, and resources assigned to each
activity.
PROJECT SCHEDULE

Selection of scheduling technique

depends on;

• Project size
• Duration
• Complexity
• Requirements
• Personnel
PROJECT COST

• A project cost is an estimate that

enables the organization to evaluate
the feasibility of the project and to
manage the capital requirements
of the project.
PROJECT RESOURCE REQUIREMENT

• Resources are required to carry out

the project tasks
Personnel
• Anything required for the completion Equipment
of a project activity. Materials
Information/Technology
• The lack of a resource will therefore be Money
a constraint on the completion of the Facilities
project activity.
Space/storage
PROJECT STAKEHOLDERS

• Stakeholders are anyone who has an interest in the project

• Project stakeholders are individuals and organizations that are actively

involved in the project, or whose interests may be affected as a result of
project execution or project completion.
PROJECT STAKEHOLDERS

• The following are examples of project stakeholders:

Project leader Sponsors

Project team members Suppliers
Upper management Business partners
Project customer Sellers
Resource Managers Organizational groups
Line Managers
PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROCESS

Outputs
IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT
PROCESS
- Projects are common in engineering
organization
- High performance (time, cost,
specifications, quality)
- Increase customer goodwill
- Increase business opportunities
- Meet client expectations
- Stages are not discrete process
- Continuous control
OPERATIONS AND PROJECTS

Two may overlap yet they share many characteristics like:

 Performed by People
 Constrained by Limited Resources
 Planned, Executed and Controlled

Operations are ongoing and repetitive while projects are temporary and unique
PROGRAMS AND PROGRAMS MANAGEMENT

• Programs are larger in scope and comprise multiple inter-related projects

• Programs adopt new set of objectives and continue to work; projects cease when
declared objectives have been attained.

• The coordinated management of a system of projects to achieve a set of business

objectives is called Program Management.
