 Mackey grew up In Houston’s well

to do Memorial Neighborhood
eating the typical mid-century
America diet of TV dinner,
Humburgers. He didn’t care care a
hoot for helath food until after
college.

because he found the required
classes boring. And he was
fascinated with the potential of
healthy eating.

texas at Austin as well as trinity in
San Antonio.
First time, Mackey got a work

 For the first time Mackey took a job

wirh a local helath food store called the
Good Food Company.

25 years old John Mackey and his then-
girlfriend Renee Lawson opened safar way,

first store, which is now a
school. He thinks of the
past, but he also
understands that to stay in
business means evolution.
