FMEA – A Standardized Process

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) – “a procedure


by which each potential failure mode in a system is
analyzed to determine the results or effects thereof on the
system and to classify each potential failure mode
according to its severity”
 Potentially for several missions/scenarios
INTRODUCTION
Landing gear is one of the most fundamental component of
aircraft design. Looking at the modern aircrafts, retractable landing
gear mechanism is one of the most dominantly used landing gear
mechanism. Earlier landing systems for aircrafts were either
conventional or tricycle. It consisted of wheels that were protruded
outside the aircrafts all the times even if the aircrafts is nowhere
near the ground. However, this system had a main drawback of very
high drag force on aircraft, which also led to many shortcomings
such as reduction in speed, decrease in fuel economy,
maneuverability, controllability etc
Purpose of the FMEA

Purpose of the FMEA:


• Methodology that facilitates process improvement
• Identifies and eliminates concerns early in the
development of a process or design
• Improve internal and external customer satisfaction
• Risk Management tool, focuses on prevention
• FMEA may be a customer requirement (likely
contractual, Level 3 PPAP, ISO 9001)

• To understand the use of Failure Modes and
Effect Analysis(FMEA)
• To learn the steps to developing FMEAs
• To summarize the different types of FMEAs
• To learn how to link the FMEA to other Process
tools
CASE STUDY
Landing gear is the only component that supports the entire aircraft,
so it is a part of the aircraft that cannot be separated. This article
select landing gear system as the study case, but due to the limited
space and security requirements, we need to simplify the real
landing gear system, only the nose-wheel steering and shimmy
damping sub-system will be analyzed here.
The model is not the system function model but the fault model, that is to
say, the model is based on the system architecture, and but not to inject
fault in the real system or function model that simulates the real system, so
there is the likely to presence of deviation between fault models and the real
situation;
 The MBSA case gives in this paper needs a lot of detailed design
information in the modeling process, so it is difficult to carry it out in the
early, and its superiority is very difficult to reflect;
 Preparation of MBSA was based more on historical data and engineering
experience to complete and the input can affects the accuracy of the model,
for example, the equipment failure modes is the input of MBSA, if we cannot
fully find out all the failure modes, the model we built is not accuracy any
more
Failure analysis of the landing gear and apparatus

Weariness, corrosion, fatigue were observed to be the


primary components and mechanisms. Weariness fatigue
happened for the most part in steel components while
corrosion happened for the most part with aluminum
combination compounds and wheels. Not very many over
disappointments were noted. Diverse disappointment were a
reasons were recognized. Plan structure lacks and assembling
imperfections drove predominantly to fatigue while poor
material choice and improve its field upkeep were the
principal starting points of corrosion related failures.
Thus, a
series of preventive measures was either prescribed or restressed. While weariness and fatigue
can best be tended to
by enhancing the nature of assembling and by better
describing in-service and assembling and by, much work stays to be done on the time-
dependent with the degradation
process and their synergism with fatigue, as consumption has
regularly been neglected in both the configuration, design and
testing stages and additionally in the support domain. [21]
Despite the broad arrival landing gear outline, design and
tests completed by the fashioners and the large makers, and
the huge number of inconvenience with travel free arrivals
accumulated by the users, the Canadian Forces (CF), and also
others, have experienced a large scope of issues or range a
disappointments with landing gear systems.
