Smart Farming
Trends & Developments
What’s Smart Farming
SMART FARMING
• Smart Farming represents the application of modern Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT) into  agriculture, leading
to another Green Revolution.

• Green Revolution is taking over the agricultural world based

upon the combined application of ICT solutions such as precision
equipment, M2M, Internet of Things (IoT), sensors and
actuators, geo-positioning systems, Big Data, Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles (UAVs, drones), robotics, etc.
SMART FARMS
• Informed Farm
– Precision Agri.
• Sensors, Information Systems, Decision Support System
• Systems exist within a farm-gate
• Connected Farm
– Devices in the farms are connected with each other and the world using internet.
– Farmers are connected to farm devices, other farms and experts.
– Things (e.g. cattle) in the farm can be monitored remotely.
• Integrated Farm
– Includes farmers in supply chain-Suppliers, Logistics, Consumers-back to farmers to
complete loop.
Machine to Machine (M2M)

• Communication between machines and how it enables

innovative advances in technology. Developing M2M
capabilities that are improving and simplifying the way people
do their business and enabling solutions agriculture.
• telematics solution designed to gather critical information
about a machine’s performance and location and make that
data quickly available.
Internet of Things (IoT)

• The IoT-based smart farming, a system is built for monitoring

the crop field with the help of sensors (light, humidity,
temperature, soil moisture, etc.) and automating the irrigation
system.
• IoT devices
– 17 million in 2016
– 27.4 million in 2021.

FUTURE OF FARMING
Machine Learning & AI
• See & Spray
– Machine learning-based technology
– Reduce the use of herbicide up to 90%.
– AI created 2.3 million jobs.
Challenges & Issues
• Interoperability of different standards
• Connectivity in rural areas
• The learning curve
• Non-awareness of the varying farm production functions
• Size of individual management zones
• Lack of scalability and configuration problems
• Technical failures and resultant damages
• Mounting e-wastes
• Loss of manual employment
• The security factor
