WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

Communication is the act of conveying meanings from

one Person/Group to another through the use of mutually
understood signs, symbols, and rules.

Without communication it will become impossible to interact

for people and groups and convey their messages.
WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY
COMMUNICATION

 Communications is fundamental to the existence and survival of humans as well

as to an organization. It is a process of creating and sharing ideas, information,
views, facts, feelings among the people to reach a common understanding.
Communication is the key to the Directing function of management.

 A manager may be highly qualified and skilled but if he does not possess good
communication skills, all his ability becomes irrelevant.
Manager must communicate his directions effectively to the subordinates to get
the work done from them properly.
FEATURES OF COMMUNICATION

The main Features in communication are:

 Sender: He is the person who wants to send the message.
 Encoding: The message is expressed/encoded in the form of
written text, image, gesture etc.
 Channel: The method of communication to be used is
determined known as CHANNEL.
 Transmission: of the encoded message as a sequence of
signals using a specific channel or medium.
 Receiver: He is the person to whom the sender wants to convey the
message.
 Decoding: Breaking and understanding of the encoded message
refers to decoding.
 Culmination: This the point where the communication ends, and
feedback is given .

The communication can be done in the form of  visual, Audio, Text etc.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

 Nonverbal Communication: describes the process of conveying of information
in a form other than verbally speaking it or using language.
 Examples of nonverbal communication include: gestures, body language, facial
expressions, eye contact etc.
 Nonverbal communication also relates to the intent of a message. Examples of
intent are voluntary, intentional movements like shaking a hand or winking, as
well as involuntary, such as sweating.
 Nonverbal communication involves the conscious and unconscious processes of
encoding and decoding. Encoding is the act of generating information such as facial
expressions, gestures, and postures.
 It takes just one-tenth of a second for someone to judge and make their first
impression.
  A first impression is a lasting non-verbal communicator. The way a person portrays
themselves on the first encounter is non-verbal statement to the observer.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
 Verbal communication: is the spoken or written conveyance of a message.
Human language is used in such communication.
 Human language can be defined as a system of symbols and the grammar that are
used to understand what a person is saying.
 The word "language" also refers to common properties of
languages. Language learning normally occurs most intensively during
human childhood. Most of the large number of human languages use
patterns of sound or gesture for symbols which enable communication with
others around them.
 Languages tend to share certain properties, although there are exceptions.
Constructed languages such as programming languages, and various
mathematical formalisms are not necessarily restricted to the properties shared by
human languages.
 Contrary to popular belief, signed languages of the world are considered to be
verbal communication because their sign vocabulary, grammar follow all necessary
classifications as spoken languages.
 Verbal Communication is thus a process by which meaning is assigned and
conveyed in an attempt to create shared understanding with other people using
spoken language.
EVOLUTION OF COMMUNICATION

Where It All Began

 Even our earliest ancestors used to know the importance of
communication. Without it, we would be unable to make connections
with other people and Interact.
 It’s difficult to know exactly when or how communication started
because we can’t talk to those who came first and the record isn’t clear.
 But there is some evidence that the earliest forms of
communication occurred through cave drawings.
Transmitting messages by pigeons

 In about the 12th century, an Egyptian sultan discovered that if you

separated pigeons from their mates, they would travel hundreds of
miles to find them. By attaching a note to the leg of the traveling
pigeon, you could send messages far and wide.

 This was a highly effective method in the world wars but it also had
its flaws.

 The messenger pigeon wouldn’t make it to the destination if it was

shot down or eaten by another animal and even the message could
be lost in transmission.

 It took too much time for delivering messages like this.

Communicating Over Wires
 In 1844, the first telegraph message was sent. It travelled 40 miles,
which seemed an impossible feat at the time. This message system
sent electrical signals over wires.
 A certified clerk would understand the letters being transmitted
and deliver the result to the recipient.
 Wires were put up all over cities and across the U.S., which laid the
groundwork for what experts call the communications revolution.
 Based on this wire system, landline telephones were built starting
in 1876 when wires were held on tall poles or buried under the
ground, and allowed people to talk from thousands of miles away.
 Though landlines have begun to phase out, many homes continue
to employ this method, which was a staple in most homes as well as
companies from the 1950s onward.
From Wires to Waves
 Thanks to the cellular phones that wires now could be avoided
by using waves instead.
 In 1946 the first call was made via Cell Phone.
 t was discovered that the same technology that transmitted the
voice over wires could be done wirelessly via satellite waves.
 However the first cell phone for the use of private citizens was
not developed until 1973 which was nearly the size of a brick.
 Getting a signal also required extending an antenna, or a long
wire, to catch it. But there was no stopping the revolution at
this point.

 However now this is the most widely used method for

communication which we will talk about later.
MODERN TECHNOLOGIES
FOR COMMUNICATION

 Voice Call

 E-Mail

 Social Sites – Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat

 Video Chat – Skype, Google Duo

 Blogging
Voice Calls

The most common form of communication method

used today is Voice Calls.
Voice call Services are provided by mobile
operators like Airtel, Jio, Vodafone by using
mobile towers.

Customers pay charges for using the service of

voice calls and in return they can communicate
anywhere in the world, where mobile network is
present by using their mobile.

Voice calls have become the most important method

to communicate today because of the fact that we
can talk instantly to the person just like we talk
in-person.
Electronic-Mail {E-MAIL}
Electronic Mail Or E-mail requires the use of Internet and basically is the same as
sending messages on phone but this time using internet.

E-mail is a much FORMAL form of communications and widely used in business

sector.

E-Commerce sites like FLIPKART and AMAZON use Emails to send the invoice of
products purchased, managers in a business firm use emails to convey messages
throughout the organisation, Even filing complains and feedbacks can be done on
email.
Social Networking
Social sites like Instagram and Facebook have become a very essential method for
businesses to reach wider audience in order to communicate with their customers.

Advertising is done by businesses for communicating the features of their products,

providing info about offers and even getting back feedbacks by customers.

Such advertising is done through ads on These SOCIAL SITES.

Video Chat
It was once a dream that we will be able to talk face-to-face even after being miles
away from each other, but with the modern technology today it is possible.

Apps like Google Duo, Skype allows us to use the camera of our phones to talk to
other people and we can see each other face-to-face and interact instantly.

Video chat requires an internet connection and is very easy to use.

Anyone having a smartphone, Laptop, PC can communicate through video call.
Blogging
Blogging is usually one way communication except the fact that people can leave
their comments and give feedback to the blogger who puts up a blog.

Even we can create our blog on sites like Qoura, Wordpress and write our thoughts to
reach a wide audience.

These sites sometimes also provide the feature to ask questions and get answers from
people using the same sites.

Qoura provides such feature and is very famous for it.

IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON
COMMUNICATION

Communication technology has helped to revolutionize the

communication process.
Electronic communication, like text messages, email and
social networking websites, has enabled society to become
more connected.
POSITIVE IMPACTS
 Daily Use

Organizations use electronic communication in day-to-day operations, and individuals

use it for personal tasks, like banking, paying bills and socializing. Communication
technology has also made long-distance communication and mass communication easy
and convenient.
 Social Influence

Communication technology, especially Internet communication like social networking

websites and dating websites, has simplified the process of socializing. Social
networking websites enable you to easily keep in touch with friends and family.
 Mass Communication

Mass communication is communicating to a large number of people. Schools and

businesses are two types of organizations which use electronic communication, like
email and e-newsletters, to communicate to a large number of people.
 Long-Distance Communication

Early forms of long-distance communication included runners who ran messages back
and forth between people and homing pigeons trained to fly written messages. The
advancement of communication technology has helped to make long-distance
communication fast and seemingly effortless.
 Communication for the Disabled

A benefit of communication technology not often talked about is the technology's

ability to give disabled people the ability to communicate. Communication technology,
like electronic communication boards and specialized computer software, helps to give
a voice to individuals who've previously gone unheard.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS
The constant use of technology could have a negative impact on how your brain
functions and develops.

Distractions
Individuals are constantly using technology, while performing other tasks at the same
time, this causes short attention spans for the coming generation, who can now be
watching TV, on their phone, and on their laptop all at the same time.
Technology and social media have created a digital world of constant communication
making it difficult for anyone to process information without being distracted by their
smart phones and tablets.
 Lack of Communication skills
One of the biggest innovations from digital technology is the ability to constantly
communicate with people. However, abusing the use of technology can negatively
affect our communication skills and make it difficult to communicate beyond our
technical devices.

 The new generations are lacking common social skills and the ability to properly
communicate face-to-face because of their constant use of communicating through
technology. Many of the qualities that are necessary to have when communicating
face-to-face are not necessary through online communication.

 Proper grammar, body language, and social cues are all disabled through
technology, so they aren’t acquiring these basic communication skills.
 Socialization
Technology and media have created an online world that is separate from the real
world, and this has shown an effect on individual’s social and emotional
development. For individuals that are constantly using technology and media as a
means for escaping from reality, it can be damaging to their social skills.

 Technology hinders both communication and social skills, which are prominent in
an individual’s social development. Using technology and media instead of
interacting with other humans will create an emotional and social detach from the
real world.
