PRESENTATION ON ACT
2 OF JULIUS CAESAR
CHELSEA YOUNG 3C
ACT 2 : SCENE 1

•Brutus contemplates the conspiracy in his garden late in the night. He has arrived at the conclusion that Julius Caesar must perish.
Brutus can‘t justify Caesar’s death by any personal acts of Caesar’s, therefore Caesar has just got to go for the public’s good.

• Brutus instructed his servant Lucius to go for a candle, after a while Lucius returns with a letter, which we found by the window.
He carries it to Brutus for him to read it. The letter essentially accuses Brtus of sleeping whilst Rome is being threatened.

• Soon after the doorbell rang and to their surprise it was Cassius and the conspirators. Cassius introduces the men and then
swiftly pulls Brutus aside, they speak very briefly before refuting to the group. The group discusses whether or not they should
bring Cicero into their group.
ACT 2 : SCENE 1 (CONTINUED)
•Cassius then suggests that they kill Antony in addition to killing Caesar. But Brutus refuses because he thinks that
will make their plans to bloody. Brutus also says that their plan us to get rid of Caesar, so therefore they should
stick to that alone.

•Cassius reminds the group that they still don’t know if Caesar will be at the Capitol that day since the warning of
the Soothsayer might keep him at home. But Decius assures Cassius by letting him know that he will make sure
that Caesar is at the Capitol.

•As the conspirators leave, Portia, Brutus’ wife enters the garden and asks Brutus what he has been worrying
about for she finds that his behavior has been strange. Brutus tells her that he’s feeling unwell. Not believing what
Brutus said, she asks why is he refusing to tell her truth, but Brutus sends her off promising to speak to her later.

•Afterwards there was a sudden knock on the door. It was Ligarius, who was looking sick. Ligarius said to Brutus
that he will feel better only if Brutus tells him that he is planning a scheme for honour. Brutus assures him that he
is and Ligarius immediately began celebrating.
ACT 2 : SCENE 2

•Caesar wanders through his house in his nightgown as he was terrified by his wife’s nightmare. Calpurnia,
Caesar’s wife, had called out about Caesar’s murder three times in her sleep. Caesar immediately ordered
a servant to ask the priest to give a sacrifice in order to find out the meaning of the dream.

•When the servant returns he explains to Caesar that the priest said that the dream will lead to something
atrocious therefore Caesar should reconsider going to the Senate. Considering her dream Calpurnia also
recommends that Ceasar stays home.

•Caesar being the ignorant person that he is refuses and clearly states that he will not let fear keep him
from going to the Senate. He states that he is not afraid of death, and that no one should be afraid of
dying, because everyone has to die at some point.
ACT 2 : SCENE 2 (CONTINUED)
•Even after listening to Caesar‘s declaration, Calpurnia still urges Caesar to stay at home and send Antony in his place to the
Senate. Fortunately after a lot of pleading and persuading, Caesar finally decided that it would be best for him to stay at home.

•Suddenly the deceiving Decius enters saying that he is here to take Caesar to the Senate. Obeying his wife’s request Caesar
tells Decius to explain to the senators that he would not be attending the Senate today.

•Decius asked why did caesar make the choice of staying home. Caesar answers by simply explaining his wife’s dream so
Decius. After hearing the dream Decius disagrees with Calpurnia’s interpretation of the dream. Decius says that the dream
represents the power Ceasar will have over Rome once he is crowned king.

•Decius also adds that the Senate has decided to give Caesar the crown, therefore if Caesar doesn’t go to the Senate today they
will change their minds. Immediately after Decius had successfully persuaded Caesar, Caesar instantly called for his robe and
headed for the Senate.
ACT 2 : SCENE 3

•A man called Artemidorus, stood on the route that Caesar will have to take in order to get to the Senate.
Whilst he stood there he was reading a letter to himself, for which he intends to give Caesar. His letter was
primarily warning Caesar to be vigilant of Brutus, Cassius and the rest of the conspirators.

•He is sad to think that the character manifested by Caesar may be destroyed by the ambitious envy of the
conspirators. He remains hopeful, however, that if his letter gets read, Caesar may yet live.
ACT 2 : SCENE 4

•Portia sends Brutus’ servant to the Senate, to observe all the events and report back to her now that
Caesar is prospering. Portia urges the servant, Lucius, to pay attention to what Caesar is doing and which
men are around and close to him.

•A Soothsayer enters and Portia asks him if Ceasar had gone to the Capitol as yet. The Soothsayer replies
by saying that he will look out for Caesar when he is heading to the Capitol. The Soothsayer adds that he
would like to have a word with Caesar.

•The Soothsayer wants to warn Caesar about the people who are around him and that they are out to do
him wicked things. The Soothsayer then leaves and stands on the streets waiting for Caesar to pass.
