III ESSAY

1.Write the critical summaries of the speeches of Brutus

and Antony.

Introduction:

Caesar’s success was not tolerated by some

Senators. So, they assassinated him. In the prescribed extract
both Brutus and Caesar speak to the Roman mob.

Brutus’ justification:

Brutus told the mob that he would give public

reasons on Caesar’s death. First, he requested them to be
patient and silent. He

loved Caesar more than anyone else in the country. His reason
for killing Caesar was that he loved Rome more than he loved
Caesar. If Caesar had been allowed to be alive, all the Romans
would have become slaves. Brutus killed Caesar so that the
people of Rome would live as free citizens. Caesar loved Brutus
so Brutus wept for him. Every Roman who loved his country
should support Brutus.

Antony’s entry:

Then Antony came with Caesar’s body. Brutus

departed requesting the people to listen.

Antony’s speech:

Antony said that the good done by man is buried

with his death. Brutus said that Caesar was ambitious. Antony
said that Caesar brought many captives to Rome and it filled
the general coffers. When the poor cried, Caesar also wept.
People saw that Antony offered Caesar the crown three times
and Caesar refused it thrice. It showed that Caesar was not
ambitious. All the Romans loved Caesar once. Antony asked
them why they did not mourn for Caesar then. He asked them
if they had lost their reasoning power.

Caesar’s will and people’s reaction:

Antony showed the people a parchment with the

seal of Caesar. It was his will. Antony showed the people the
places where the Senators stabbed in Caesars body. He
showed Brutus’ “unkindest cut of all”. He read out Caesar’s will.
Caesar had given seventy -five drachmas to every citizen. He
had left all his walks, private arbours and orchards for people’s
use. On hearing this, the people got wild and they decided to
set fire to the Senators’ house.
