Rational Equation

A rational equation is an equation that contains one or more rational expressions.

The time t in hours that it takes to travel d miles can be determined by using the
equation t = , where r is the average rate of speed. This equation is a rational
equation.
Steps for solving a rational equation

• Find the common denominator.

• Multiply everything by the common denominator.
• Simplify.
• Check the answer(s) to make sure there isn't an
extraneous solution.
Problem No. 1
1.
Solve for x in the equation =
Step 1: Find the LCD
The denominators are 2x + 4 and 5
So, the LCD is (2x + 4) (5)

Step 2: Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD

(2x + 4) (5) ( = ) (2x + 4) (5)

1.
Step 3: Solve the equation (2x + 4) (5) ( = ) (2x + 4) (5)
=

Cancel out the common factor for the numerator to the denominator

(5)(x - 2) = (2x + 4) (1)

5x – 10 = 2x + 4
1.
 Combine like terms
5x – 2x = 10 + 4

 Apply the Division Property of Equality

= =

x=

So, the solution to the equation is x =

1.
Step 4: Checking. Multiply the solution by substituting the computed value of x in
the equation.

Given: = where x =

= = = =
= =
= = = =

Rational Inequality
A rational inequality is an inequality that contains a rational expression,
where a rational expression is a ratio of two polynomials. That is, a
rational expression is of the form R(x) / Q(x), where R(x) and Q(x) are
polynomials and Q(x) is not zero. The general form of rational inequality
has a rational expression on the left-hand side of the inequality and a 0
on the right-hand side of the inequality.
Steps for solving rational inequalities
1. Put the inequality in a general form.
2. Set the numerator and denominator equal to zero and solve. ...
3. Plot the critical values on a number line, breaking the number line
into intervals.
4. Take a test number from each interval and plug it into the original
inequality.
