INEQUALITIES

GUIDE CARD

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle
their most powerful enemy – the evil THANOS. On a mission to collect
all six infinity stones, so that they can stop Thanos to destroy half of
the universe.

Before the avengers can do their great mission, they need to pass first
this challenge: how to illustrate and Solve Quadratic Inequality.
This will be a practice so that in their real battle with Thanos, they can
solve easily the inequality brought by this evil man in real life.

Hey Friends, look what I

found!
I think these symbols have something to
do with the challenge given to us.

That’s right, those symbols are greater than

( > ), less than ( < ), additional to that, we have
also greater than or equal to (≥ ), less than or
equal to (≤ ) and not equal (≠ ). These are the
symbols used in INEQUALITY.

How does quadratic equation

differ from quadratic inequality?

I remember it, the standard form of

Quadratic
Equation is ax² + bx + c = 0, where a, b, c are real
numbers and a ≠ 0. Same as in Quadratic Inequality,
BUT
equal sign is not used but these symbols that will
replace it, > , <, ≥ , ≤ , and ≠. Therefore, the
standard form of it will be ax² + bx + c > 0. Got It!

What about the solving of this quadratic Inequality?

Is it the same with Quadratic Equations?
Partly yes, because in solving quadratic inequality,
you need to find the roots of its corresponding equality.
The points corresponding to the roots of the
equality, when plotted on the number line, separate the
line into two or three intervals.
An interval is part of the solution of the
inequality if a number in that interval makes the
inequality true.
Did you get it, Hulk? Look at these examples?

Find the solution set of x2 – x – 2 ≥ 0.

Solution: STEPS
1. x2 – x – 2 ≥ 0 1. We get the corresponding
x2 – x – 2 = 0 equality. Change ≥ into =.
2. (x–2)(x+1) = 0 2. Factor the left side.

Ooops! You may choose the appropriate

technique you’ve learned in solving quadratic
equations such as extracting the square root,
factoring, completing the square and Quadratic
Formula. ) If the given ax² + bx + c will be
factorable, then it will be easy to
solve the inequality.

3. (x–2)(x+1) = 0 3. From the factors , use

x–2 = 0 x+1 = 0 zero product property (set each
x=2 x = -1 factors to zero) then solve for x.

This will be the exciting part, as you noticed

in Quadratic Equation solutions may be two
solutions one solution or no solution even it is
rational, irrational or imaginary.
BUT in Quadratic Inequality, it is possible that
the solution set will be infinite solutions,
remember the
interval
s
4. Plot
the
points corresponding to 2 and
-1

As you can see, the number line was divided into 3, this will be
the intervals you will use. (x ≤ -1 ), ( x = 0, 1) and x
≥2
Test a number from each interval against the inequality.
x ≤ -1 9+ x = 1 middle
x = -3 3 -2 interval x2 – x – 2 ≥

Thus, the solution set of
the given inequality is
{ x: x ≤ -1 or x ≥
2 } or
-1 ≥ x

and its graph is shown.
ALL POINTS WITH THE
RED
COLORS ARE SOLUTION SETS OF THE GIVEN INEQUALITY.

Remember this:
Open circle ( >, < ) : the point is not included in the solution
Solid circle ( ≥, ≤ ): the point is included in the solution

Here is another example: Solve the inequality x2 – x

< 12. Follow the steps:
1. Write the inequality in standard form.
1. x2 – x – 12
<0 Then rewrite the corresponding equality,
x2 – x – 12 the > to
=0 = sign.
2. (x – 4)(x + 3) = 0 2. Factor the left side.
3. x – 4 = 0 x + 3 = 0 3. Set each factors to zero ( Zero
x = 4 and x = –3 Product Prop.) then solve the value of x.
4.
4. Plot the points corresponding to 4 and
-3.

Another technique so that you can easily do the test

point by using the factors of the inequality. Remember
it is your choice which number from the intervals you
will use.

x < x = ( -2,-1, x >

So, the solution set of the

given inequality will be
-3< x < 4
x = ( -2,-1, 0,1,2,3 )
AMAZING! With these guides and examples, we can now do
the activities ahead about this topic. Truly, if we share our
thoughts and we unite for one mission, there will be no
problem. What a relief! We, the avengers, are ready for the
mission.
