MOODULE 5: RATIONAL FUNCRIONS, EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

What are the distinct features of rational function, rational equation and rational
inequality?
1. Rational Function
A rational function is any function which can be written as the ratio of two
polynomial functions, where the polynomial in the denominator is not equal to zero.

2. Rational Equation
A rational equation is an equation containing at least one fraction whose
numerator and denominator are polynomials. These fractions may be on one or both
sides equation.
3. Rational Inequality
A rational inequality is an inequality which contains a rational expression. The
trick to dealing with rational inequalities is to always work with zero on one side of
the inequality. A rational expression changes its sign only at its zeros and its
undefined values.

What are the differences of the following:

1. Rational Function and Rational Equation
The rational function is a polynomial in the denominator is not equal to zero.
While, the rational equation refers to an equation that contains at least one rational
function, whose numerator and denominator are polynomials.
2. Rational Equation and Rational Inequalities
The rational equation refers to an equation that contains at least one rational
function. An ‘equals’ sign is placed in the middle and the rational function can be on
one or both sides of the equation. While, the rational inequalities is always work with
zero on the side of the inequality.

Share one tip or suggestion on how to identify whether the given is a rational
function, rational equation or rational inequality.
1. In able to determine whether the given is a rational function, rational equation or
rational inequality, you have to see the symbols used in expressions.

After answering this module, I’ve learned a lot of information about constant
function, linear function, quadratic function, and cubic function. I learned how to
solve and analyze it. I also learned the definition and features of rational functions,
rational equations, and rational inequalities. Overall, its was a fun experience.

MODULE 6: SOLVING RATIONAL EQUATIONS AND RATIONAL INEQUALITIES

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Complete the following statements by writing the correct word or words and
formulas.
1. An extraneous solution is an equation containing at least one rational expression
with a polynomial in the numerator and denominator.
2. To determine if the endpoints of the intervals in the solution should be included or
not you need to substitute the critical values to the inequality.
3. In order to get the critical values, you need to set numerator and denominator
equal to zero.
4. The first step in solving rational inequality is to put the inequality in general form
where in one side must always be zero and the other side is in a single fraction.
5. If the test value makes the inequality true, then the entire interval is a solution to
the inequality.

TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION:

1. Explain the similarities and differences in solving between rational
equations and inequalities?
Their similarity between the rational equation and rational inequality is rational
inequalities are not using the equal sign at the beginning, at the end of its solution its
numerator and denominator will be equated to zero. The only difference is if you
multiply or divide both sides of an equation by the same negative number, the
equation remains the same, but If you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality
by the same negative number, the inequality reverses.

2. Why do extraneous solutions sometimes occur and don’t work in the

original form of the equation?
Because some operations produce extra answers, and sometimes, these
operations are a part of the path to solving the problem. When we get these extra
answers, they usually don't work when we try to plug them back into the original
problem.

MODULE 7: REPRESENTATIONS RATIONAL FUNCTIONS

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

In your own words, how do you represent rational function using
a. Equation
To represent the rational function as an equation, you first need to
identify if its numerator and denominator are both polynomials. If there’s no equation
given, then make a new one by analyzing the problem given, substitute and then
solve.

b. Graph
Rational function can be represent in a graph if you have already the
points or table of values. Next, you draw a Cartesian Plane and plot the points in
their respective location. Then you finally illustrate it into a graph.

c. Table of values
Representing rational function into a table of values is simple, you need
an equation or graph that has already a points, to map out the corresponding values
of x and y for the given line.

MODULE 8: THE DOMAIN AND RANGE OF A RATIONAL FUNCTION

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

In your own words, how do you represent rational function using
To determine the domain and range in rational functions, equate the
denominator to zero and solve for the variable x. The objective is that it must have
non-zero denominator. The value that would make it zero is the value that would not
be in included in the domain. To find the range, solve the equation for x in terms of y.
Again, it must have non-zero denominator. The value that would make the
denominator equal to zero is the value that would not be included in the range.

After reading this module I’ve learn that a function is a simple rule of
correspondence between two variables x and y. The x variable is considered the
input which is also called the independent variable while the y variable is the output
which is also called the dependent variable. It is a basic notion that for every value of
x there corresponds a value in y. This set of values in x is the domain while the set of
values in y is the range of a rational function.
