GRADE 8 (QUARTER 1)
MODULE 3.2
SIMPLIFYING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

I. Introduction:

Can you still remember how to reduce a fraction to its lowest

term? How about factoring?
In this module you are to learn how to simplify rational
algebraic expressions using the concepts mentioned.

II. Objective:
At the end of this module, you must be able to simplify
rational algebraic expression.

III. Vocabulary List:

Factoring - the process of finding the factors of a given expression

Common Factor – a term which is a factor found in the numerator
and at the same time denominator
Lowest Term – an expression where there is no common factor in the
numerator and denominator

IV. Pre-Test:

1. What is the simplest form of

1 d. -2

a. b. 2 c.
2 ?
d. −1

is in its simplest
2. Which of the following expressions is equal to

a. + 1 b. − 1 c. 1
3. Which of the following rational algebraic
expressions form?
2 x 2x 3xy4

4.

5.

6.

Great! Now you remember how to do factoring. Let’s use this

to simplify rational algebraic expressions.

STEPS IN SIMPLIFYING RATIONAL

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
NOTE:
A rational algebraic 1. Factor both numerator and denominator.
expression is in its lowest 2. Divide the numerator and denominator by their
term if the numerator and greatest common factor.
denominator have no more
common factors other than 1. 3. Multiply the remaining factors and their product
is the rational algebraic expression in simplest
form.

Let’s study the following examples.

15a2b2
Example 1: Simplify: ;
15ab
3•5•a •a •b
- factor the numerator and denominator
STEP 1:
3•5
- divide out the common factor
or you can divide the numerator
3•5•a •a •b and denominator by their GCF
-
STEP 2: multiply the remaining factors and their
3•5 product is the rational algebraic expression
in simplest form

STEP 3: ab
2
22
Theref 15a b = ab
ore, 15ab

Following the same steps, let us study more examples.

2
x − 25
Example 2: Give the simplest form of: ;
4x + 20
(x +5)(x −5)

STEP 1:
4(x +5)
x2 − 25
STEP 2:
4x + 20
2
x − 25 x −5
x −5
STEP 3: Therefore, =
4x + 20 4
4

2 2
y + 6xy +9x
Example 3: Express in simplest form
2 2
y −9x
( y +3x)(y +3x)

STEP 1:
( y +3x)(y −3x)
( y +3x)(y +3x)

STEP 2:
( y +3x)(y −3x)
y + 3x
STEP 3: y +6xy +9x y + 3x
2 2

y −3x
Therefore, =
2 2
y −9x y −3x
x−y
Example 4: Write in lowest term.
y−x

At first glance, there’s no way in which we can factor x − y and

y − x to get a common factor. However, − = −1(− + ) =
−1( − )

So, we will have this solution;

STEP1: −1( − )
1( − )
1( − )
STEP 2: −1( − )

1 Therefore

STEP 3: −1 = −1

Example 5: Simplify 2
12 −17s −5s2

Both the numerator and denominator are quadratic trinomials where a > 1.
Factor each term first by using any method you are familiar with. For
easier solution, let’s try the AC Test.
