Learning Competency
The learner transforms the quadratic
function defined by y = ax2 + bx + c into
form a = a(x-h) + k and vice-
versa.

Hello there human! You are just

in time! We are now on our
search for the six
infinity stones and we would like
to ask
for your gracious help in this
journey. See, the six stones are
scattered within the pages and if
you spot them, we may bring them
to earth to save your planet against
Thanos.
Will you kindly help us in this
mission?
Come, join the
ride!

Let us consider the equation y = 3x2 + 30x + 63, this quadratic function is in its
general
form. To transform a quadratic function into its standard form, here are the
steps:

Solution:
y = 3x2 + 30x + 63 First, combine all similar
terms.
y = (3x2 + 30x) +
Then, group the terms containing
63 y = 3 (x2 + x.
Next, get their numerical common
10x) + 63 factor. In this case, 3.

y = 3(x2 + 10x ) + 63 Then, use Completing the Square to

insert the third term inside the
parenthesis. Also, subtract the final
value from the constant term outside
y = 3 (x2 + 10x _+25_ ) + the parenthesis.
63 - 75 3(10/2)2 = 3(5)2 = 3(25)
= 75
y = 3 ( x + 5 )2 –12
Simplify and express the perfect
Hence, h = 5, k = square
-12 trinomial as the square of a
binomial.

On the other hand, to transform a quadratic function from its standard form
into its
general form follow these steps:

Solution:
y = 2 (x –4 )2 + 9 First, expand the binomial.

y = 2(x2 –8x +16) Then, multiply the trinomial to 2 (or

+9 the number outside the
parenthesis.).

Then, simplify and add 9.

y = 2x2 –16x +32
+ 9 y = 2x2 –16x
+41
Now, we are ready for the real battle.
