government agency or office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for

Introductory Message
Welcome to Media and Information Literacy!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the


Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to


guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Media & Information Literacy Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Media and Information Literacy Activity Sheet is developed to help


you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

I. Learning Competency (MELC)


Cite practical situation when to apply knowledge in intellectual property, copyright,
and fair use guidelines.

II. Background Information for Learners

What makes us different from other God’s creations? One of the greatest gifts
God has given us is our creative mind. Our creative mind that thinks and invents
something for the human race. And whatever we have created art and designs, literary
works, music, symbols, images and names used for businesses becomes our
intellectual property- a product which is tangible or intangible. Even a eureka moment at
the breakfast table that is applied at work, at home or anywhere becomes an intellectual
property. Nowadays, with multi-media in constant progress, competitive intellectuals are
in the market. Their full potentials are tapped with the support of the media industry and
the research enthusiasts.

Intellectual property is divided into two categories: Industrial property includes


but is not limited to patents for inventions, trademarks, industrial designs and
geographical indications. On the other hand, copyright covers literary works like
novels, poems and plays, films, music and artistic works, for example drawings,
paintings, photographs, sculptures, web site pages and architectural design. Rights
related to copyright include those of performing artists in their performances, producers
of phonograms in their recordings, and broadcasters in their radio and television
programs.

In its most general sense, fair use is any
copying of copyrighted material done for a
limited and “transformative” purpose, such as
to comment upon, criticize, or to make parody
of a copyrighted work. Such uses can be done
without permission from the copyright owner. In
other words, fair use is a defense against a
claim of copyright infringement. If your use
qualifies as a fair use, then it would not be
considered as infringement.

Exercise 2: A Touch of Music

Directions: Compose a song or rap of not less than three stanzas dedicated to your
hard work in school, at home or in your community. Rubrics are given for scoring.

o Exemplary (40 points). The song lyrics are outstanding; the words are
memorable.

o Satisfactory 30 points). The song lyrics are good; the words are memorable.

o Fair (20 points). The song lyrics are somewhat coherent; the words are well
received by the audience.

o Poor (10 points). The song lyrics are not coherent; the words are not
memorable.

Remember

Anybody’s intellectual or creative creation becomes his/her property. These creations


are shared for man’s growth and development which we have the access and
glimpses to these intellectual creations and inventions. However, we can’t just take
away nor borrow their works. We have to acknowledge them as the owner of the
copyrighted and patented works and inventions for they are protected by the law.
Consequently, written permission must be secured from the owner or from the
publisher.
