Weak Syllables: (unstressed syllables in a word)

Terdapat 4 jenis weak syllables:

• 1. Schwa /ә /
• 2. /u:/ and /u/ (long /u/ and short /u/)
• 3. /i:/ and /I/ (long /i/ and short /i/)
• 4. Syllabic consonants ( /n/, /l/, /r/, /m/, /ɳ/)

WHAT IS A SYLLABLE?

 A syllable is a rhythmic unit of speech. Syllables


make it easier for the human mind to process the
speech stream. A syllable is made up of one or
more segments; segments are the building
blocks for syllables.
THE SYLLABLE IS A
PHONOLOGICAL UNIT

 A syllable is a unit of organization for a


sequence of speech sounds.

For example, the word water is composed


of two syllables: wa and ter .
STRUCTURE OF THE SYLLABLE

A syllable is typically made up of a nucleus (most often a


vowel ) with optional initial and final margins

(consonant) + VOWEL + (consonant)

Consonant /l/ di kata-kata tersebut disebut dengan syllabic consonant /l/


(/l/ mewakili satu suku kata (syllable), maka /l/ disebut dengan syllabic
consonant.

Kata muddle /…./ = 2 suku kata (two syllables= ma dan dl)
