Review of Basic Algebra
• 3(x − 5) − 2(x − 7)
= 3x − 15 − 2x + 14
=x−1
• a(3a − 1) − 4(2a + 3)
= 3a2 − a − 8a − 12 = 3a2 − 9a − 12
= 5x(3x + 4) − 2(3x + 4)
= 15x2 + 20x − 6x − 8
= 15x2 + 14x − 8
Numerical coefficient
Solution 7x − 3y − 5
= 7(−2) − 3(3) − 5 replace x by (− 2) and y by 3
= − 14 − 9 − 5
= − 28
Rules Examples
Rules Examples
3x – 2x = 6 + 5
x = 11
• You can substitute your result back into the original equation to check
your answer.
• 3(11) – 5 = 2(11) + 6
33 – 5 = 22 + 6
28 = 28
– The left hand side equals the right hand side (LHS = RHS).
LCD is 15
