Introduction 3

 The information age is quickly revolutionizing the way transactions are

completed . Everyday actions are increasingly being handled
electronically, instead of pencil and paper.

 Recent cases of identity theft have highlight the need for methods to prove
that someone is truly who he/she claims to be.

 Face Detection technique may solve the problem since a face is undeniably
connected to its owner expect in the case of identical twins. The system
can then compare scans to records stored in a central or local database.

Problem Statement 5

 To solve the problem that arises due to facial detection

Following are the common problems that a face

recognition system can have while detecting and recognizing
faces:
1. Automatically locate the face
2. Illumination
3. Pose
4. Expressions
Objectives and Scope 6
 The objective is to build a face detection system for student
attendance in a classroom owing to the difficulty in manual
as well as traditional means of attendance system during the
lecture and maintain computer user data.

 The system should be able to detect student's frontal face in

a classroom.

 The system should be able to automatically reveal the

number of students present in a classroom on a GUI.

 The facial Detection system should recognize student stored

on a database of faces by matching them to images on a
database.
System Architecture 7
Advantages and Disadvantages 8

 Advantages
a. There are many benefits to face recognition system such as its
convenience and social acceptability all you need is your picture
taken for it to work.
b. Face Detection is easy to use and in many cases it can be
performed without a person even knowing.
c. Face Detection is an inexpensive biometric in the market and its
price should continue to go down.

 Disadvantages
a. Face Detection system can’t tell the difference between
identical twins.
Applications 9

 Security : Access control, comparing surveillance images to know

terrorist.
 Voter verification : Where eligible politicians are required to
verify the identity during a voting process that is intended to stop
proxy voting where the vote may not go as expected.
 Residential Security : Alert home owners of approaching
personnel.
 Banking Using ATM : The software is able to quickly verify a
customers face.
 Law Enforcement : Minimizing victim trauma verifying identify
for court records and comparing school surveillance camera images
to know child molesters.
Conclusion 10

 Face Detection technologies have been associated

generally with very costly top secure applications.

 Today the core technologies have evolved and the cost of

equipment is going down dramatically due to integration
and the increasing processing power.

 Certain applications of face detection technology are now

cost effective , reliable and highly accurate.
