1. What is 5S Concept ?

5S concept is a systematic method / tool adopted in work place to

improve Safety & to create a better work place environment.

The work place should support us to carry out our work in
easiest way ensuring Safety, Quality , Productivity, low cost,
good morale, motivation etc than it is termed as better work
place environment

1S SEIRI -Sorting / segregating

Sort required & not required items in our

workplace.
Dispose not required items.
Further segregate required items based on
a) Frequency of usage.
b) Type of item as per workplace need.
2S SEITON - Systematic arrangement

Safety & easy usage is important in this step.

Frequently used items should be kept as near to
workplace as possible.Not frequently used item
may be kept far off workplace.

Systematically arrange segregated items based on

easy accessibility, easy retrieval ensuring safety.
3S SEISO - Spic & Span

- Cleaning & Wiping our workplace.

- Identifying abnormality like more dust in particular
area, oil leakage, broken parts.
- Eliminating abnormality by identifying root cause &
taking countermeasure.
4S SEIKETSU -Standardization

- Standardizing to maintain the above 3 steps condition

always.
- Standardizing is establishing rules, creating fool
proof method so that normal & abnormality is easily
visualized in workplace.
How to standardize
- Creating identification, Visual Displays, Communication to
others, Identifying responsibility – area wise, introducing
kanban for stock item with min & max quantity etc.
5S SHITSUKE -Self Discipline

- Follow the standards established in 4S by all to

maintain good workplace condition
- Identify abnormality & eliminate it maintain &
improve work place environment.
