CHEERDANCE

WHAT IS CHEERDANCE?
Team activity in which elements of dance and acrobatics are combined
with shouted slogans in order to entertain spectators at sporting events
and to encourage louder and more enthusiastic cheering. Once
exclusively a sideline activity geared toward supporting school sports,
cheerleading has gained recognition as a sport in its own right and often
operates outside the school context altogether. Cheerleading has long
been considered an iconic American activity symbolizing school spirit,
leadership, youthfulness, and sex appeal.
TRIVIA
Today, Cheerdancing is identified as one of the most spectacular events
in one of the biggest collegiate sports in the country, the UAAP
(University Athletic Association of the Philippines)
BENEFITS OF CHEERDANCE:
1. Physical Endurance
Cheerleading is a great cardio workout! Cheers typically only last a
couple of minutes so it is necessary to repeat high-energy routines.
Choreography contains not only dance but also tumblings, jumps and
sometimes stunts, all which require great stamina especially to maintain
a big smile throughout the routine as well!
BENEFITS OF CHEERDANCE:
2. Strength Training
Cheerleading is a whole body workout. You will build strength by
rehearsing weekly, particularly in your lower body, shoulders and core.
BENEFITS OF CHEERDANCE:
3. Flexibility
Stretching exercises within each class will develop your flexibility,
increasing your range of movement. This will help improve your high
kicks, jumps and tumbles within the sequences.
BENEFITS OF CHEERDANCE:
4. Coordination
Coordination is a key element of cheerleading. You will improve your
ability to learn routines and perform them in time with your team mates.
BENEFITS OF CHEERDANCE:
5. Team player and Leadership skills
Performing and practicing as part of a team is vital for cheerleading in
order to complete sequences in unison and support stunts and tumbles.
It can also improve leadership skills by building confidence to speak up
for the good of the team.
Learning to listen to both team mates and the instructor is crucial for
undertaking tumbles and stunts safely. These are great transferable
skills.
BENEFITS OF CHEERDANCE:
6. Positive Mood
Release those happy hormones! Exercising releases endorphins which
will boost your mood.
Cheerleading in particular is all about portraying a positive outlook with
upbeat chants and a huge smile which is sure to leave you in a good
mood!
ELEMENTS OF CHEERDANCE:
Cheerleading competition routines get more exciting and more
creative every year, but one thing never changes—competition
routines always include six elements:
TUMBLING
DANCE
JUMPS
CHEERS
STUNTING
TOSSES
BASIC STUNT TERMS
A stunt always consists of more than one person and because of this is it
important to understand the specific terms and jobs for each person in a
stunt group.
BASE
The cheerleader who lifts, holds, and supports the flyer and is also
responsible for catching the flyer from a dismount or cradle. There are
usually two bases in every stunt.
• Main Base: The term only applies for stunts where the flyer is on one
leg. The main base has most of the flyers foot and weight, as the stunt
usually happens overhead. The main base usually places one hand
under the heel of the flyer’s foot and the other under the toes.
• Side Base: The term only applies for stunts where the flyer is on one
leg. The side base supports the foot of the flyer usually by placing one
hand under the middle of the flyer’s foot and the other on top,
ensuring it is secure and does not turn to the side or lose balance.
BACK SPOT
The cheerleader who stands behind the stunt and is responsible for
supporting the weight of the flyer and catching the head and neck of the
flyer from a dismount or cradle.
FRONT SPOT
The cheerleader who stands in front of the stunt and is responsible for
making sure the flyer does not fall forward. This position is not essential
to any stunt but provides extra support for the bases and extra safety for
the flyer.
SPOTTER
The cheerleader who is not actually part of the stunt group, but stands
around for safety reasons in case the flyer should fall.
FLYER
The cheerleader who is raised into the air and is responsible for keeping
the balance of the stunt, performing clean motions, and safe dismounts
or cradles. The flyer is usually very flexible and is usually one of the
smallest girls on the squad.
