NAME THESE THREE SHAPES

Rectangle Square
RHOMBUS
SQUARE
•A square is both a rhombus and a rectangle
•A Parallelogram with four congruent sides
and four congruent angles.
•Each interior angle of a square measures 90°
AREA AND PERIMETER

•Area = S 2

• Perimeter = 4s
QUICK TEST

Answer: 256 m2
• Find the Perimeter of A square if its sides measure 36cm.
Answer: 144 cm
• Find the side of the square if its area measures 625cm 2
Answer: 25
• cm
Find the side of the square if its perimeter measures 200m
Answer: 50m
BASIC PROPERTIES
•Property 1. Each of the interior angles of a square is 90°
•Property 2. The diagonals of a square bisect each other.
•Property 3. The opposite sides of a square are parallel.
•Property 4. A square whose side length is s has area s2
•Property 5. A square whose side length is s has perimeter 4s.
•Property 6. A square whose side length is s has a diagonal of length
s√2.
•Property 7. The diagonals of a square are equal.
WHAT IS A DIAGONAL?
PROPERTIES OF THE DIAGONAL OF A
SQUARE
•The diagonals of a square are congruent.
•The diagonals of a square bisect each other.
•The diagonals of a square are perpendicular.
•Every diagonal of a square bisects its opposite angles.
•Each diagonal divides the square into two congruent isosceles
right triangles.
EXAMPLE 4: FIND THE LENGTH OF EACH SIDE
IF DE MEASURES 5 CM.

QUICK TEST
•Find the length of each side if DE measures 13 cm.
• 13√2 cm
•Find the length of each side if DE measures 30 cm.
• 30√2 cm
WORD PROBLEMS

Find the area and perimeter of a square

with diagonal of 200 meters.
• Use the Pythagorean theorem to write:
• A2 + B2 = 2002
• A2 + B2 = 20,000
• 20,000 DIVIDED BY 2 = 10000  √10000 = 100  A&B=100
• 1002 + 1002 = 20,000
• Solve for S2 to find the area
A= 1002 m2
A= 10, 000 m2

We need to find S to find the perimeter

S = 100
Perimeter = 4s = 400 m.
