What is the
importance of
these ancient
instruments?
How do these
instruments
improve the lives of
people?
UNITS AND
SCIENTIFIC
NOTATION
Experiments are
performed to measure
physical quantities.
Physical quantities
- can be expressed in terms of a
number of fundamental
quantities. Mass, distance,
time are some of these
fundamental quantities.
A physical quantity will
only make sense if
compared to a reference
standard.
Meter stick is an
example of
reference standard

What is significant
figure?
Rules in Determining the Number of Significant
Figure

1. All non zero digits are significant.

2. All zeros between non zero digits are significant.
3. All zeros before the first non zero digit are NOT
significant.
4. All zeros to the right of the last non zero digit are
significant.
Determine the number of significant figures
of the values given below:

1. 0.0025
2. 12. 00030
3. 3.1416
4. 20.20
5. 0. 4
What is a scientific
notation?
Scientific notation also called
exponential notation is a convenient
way of writing values
using the power of ten notation
wherein we can determine the
number of significant digits as
well as the place value of the digit.
e
Format: C.MMMMM x 10

where:
C - the characteristic digit, may be any digit from 0-9
M - the mantissa digits, may be any digit from 0-9
10 - base
e - exponent, the number of times the decimal point is
moved to either toward left or right
Rules in expressing
standard notation to
scientific notation
When the decimal point is moved from
right to left, the result is positive
exponent.

3
Example: 7806.123 = 7.806123 x10
When the decimal point is moved
left to right, the result is negative
exponent.

-5
Example: 0.00007806123 = 7.806123 x 10
Explain the
importance of
scientific notation -5
in your life?
Addition and
Subtraction involving
scientific notation
1. When two or more quantities are
added or subtracted, make sure the
exponents are the same.

2. Add/subtract the number. Keep the

exponent the same.
Example
3 3
(6.2 x 10 ) + (1.74 x10 )
3
= (6.2+1.74) x 10
3
= 7.94 x 10
Example
3 5
(7.1 x 10 ) + (5.2 x 10 )
5 5
= (0.071 x10 ) + (5.2 x 10 )
5
= 5.271 x 10
