•Low upper service temperature, 90-120°C
•Attacked by highly oxidizing acids, swell rapidly in chlorinated solvents and
aromatics
•Heat-aging stability is adversely affected by contact with metals
•Post molding dimensional changes due to crystallinity effects – this can be
solved with nucleating agents
•Poor paint adhesion
PROPERTIES OF POM
•Excellent mechanical properties over a temperature range upto 140°C, down to
-40°C
• High tensile strength, rigidity and toughness (short-term)
• Low tendency to creep (as compared to nylon) and fatigue (long-term).
•High degree of crystallinity and excellent dimensional stability
•Excellent wear resistance
•Low coefficient of friction
•Good resistance to organic solvents and chemicals (except phenols) at room
temperature
•Low smoke emission
•High gloss surfaces
•Low moisture absorption
PROPERTIES OF NYLON
•High strength and stiffness at high temperature
•Good impact strength, even at low temperature
•Very good flow for easy processing
•Good abrasion and wear resistance
•Excellent fuel and oil resistance
•Good fatigue resistance
•PA 6 has excellent surface appearance and better processability than PA66 (due to its very
low viscosity)
•Good electrical insulating properties
•High water absorption and water equilibrium content limits the usage
•Low dimensional stability
•Attacked by strong mineral acids and absorbs polar solvents
•Proper drying before processing is needed
PROPERTIES OF PBT
•It has excellent stain resistant and machining characteristics.
It enables efficient use of material to reduce weight and cost.
It delivers excellent short-term mechanical properties, such as high strength, toughness and
stiffness as well as good practical impact.
•It provides good creep resistance, dimensional stability and low moisture absorption
characteristics.
•It gives good durability under thermal stress and /or harsh chemical environments, particularly in
automotive underhood applications.
•PBT's high heat-deflection temperatures and high temperature index ratings help components
withstand both short term thermal excursions and long-term heat exposure
•Polybutylene Terephthalate helps protect electrical and electronic components with extremely high
electrical resistance and high dielectric strength that guard against leakage and breakdown in
power circuitry
•The low dielectric loss minimizes energy absorption in high frequency electronic uses
•Where needed, appropriate flame-resistant grades are available.
robust chemical resistance.
PROPERTIES OF PC
•Highly transparent. Offers light transmission as good as glass
•High toughness even down to -20°C
•High mechanical retention up to 140°C
•Intrinsically flame retardant
•Offers good electrical insulation properties that are not influenced by water or
temp.
•Possesses good abrasion resistance
•Can withstand repeated steam sterilizations
Disadvantages OF PC
•Easily attacked by hydrocarbons and bases
•Post prolonged exposure to water at over 60°C, their mechanical properties
start to degrade
•Proper drying is required before processing
•Low fatigue endurance
•Yellowing tendency post exposure to UV
PROPERTIES OF SAN
Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) is a hard and transparent thermoplastic which can
be easily processed by conventional techniques. It is the predecessor of
acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and shows good resistance to stress cracking,
crazing and thermal shocks. It is also chemical, grease and food stain
resistant which expands it applications in kitchen wares, basins, bathroom
fittings, cosmetic packagings, etc.
