What is pressure?
Pressure is the amount of force exerted per unit area.
Gas and liquid molecules are in constant, random
motion called “Brownian” motion.
The average speed of these molecules increases with
increasing temperature.
When a gas or liquid molecule collides with a surface,
momentum is imparted into the surface.
Pressure = Force
Area
(force = mass x acceleration)

Units of Pressure

a. Pounds per square inch (psi), usage of which is supposedly

discouraged.
b. Kilopascal (KPa) (or newton per square meter, N/m2), which is the
SI unit for pressure.
c. In Chemistry, a widely used unit for pressure is the atmosphere
(atm), but the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry
discourages its usage.
d. Torrr (or mmHg), yet the International Union of Pure and Applied
Chemistry is also discouraging the usage of this unit.
